  1. USING DATA TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE Friday 20th June 2013

  2. Aim “To show how at JLC we have used technology to bring together a system of data captures with a follow up performance analysis to enable managers to make in – year interventions to support students and address issues which arise”

  3. Background • Focus on MTGs was not aspirational enough for students and caused many of them to coast • There was a need to improve consistency of performance across the College as a whole • Lack of in-year data to enable managers to make early interventions at a class or cohort level • Difficult for mentors to monitor in-year performance across a students programme of study

  4. Actions • All targets for students became Aspirational Target Grades (ATGs) which are course specific so each student may have different targets from course to course on AS and A2’s. (Pre calculated by PixL6 to reflect the different thermometers from subject to subject) • In theory all students on a course achieve their ATGs the course would get an ALPS grade 3 • BTEC still given the ‘traditional’ ALPS target grade as none available from PixL6. We will be looking to produce our own for BTEC in the future (due to different methods of delivery, etc)

  5. Actions • Set up a series of 5 in-year ‘data captures’ which staff enter in Markbook • 1 data capture each ½ term • Further 2 marks entered during the 42 day period and after the PPEs in January (Pre-Public Exams) • Also some data collected on ‘effort’ and ‘deadlines’

  6. How did we use the data capture? • Produced spreadsheets showing the overall results that would occur by course • Produced overall ALPS grade calculated for either the whole cohort within a subject or by individual class • Curriculum Managers analysed the results and met with their Improvement Director to discuss the results and any issues that were arising, along with what support/intervention was necessary

  7. How has the data capture evolved? • Now have a ‘Performance Analysis’ which follows on from the data capture, in two parts

  8. Impact • Generated some very good discussions between classroom teachers and CMs and CMs/IDs and has enabled more students to be identified for intervention and support • Enabled mentors to have a much better overview of their students’ overall performance across their programmes of study • Students are very aware of their targets, have taken on board the concept of fine grading and are keen to reach their targets

  9. Impact • Senior Managers have been able to have data to identify the College’s movement towards the KPIs in year • Teachers have much clearer picture of their overall class performance and can also access the performance of their students in other subjects • Students can see their own profile on Pro Portal and copies were sent out to parents

  10. The future • Working on a ‘Teacher’s group Analysis’ which summarises the performance of all classes taught by a teacher (including co-taught) so teachers can get an overview of how all of their classes are/have performed on a single screen • Looking to include: ~ ALL classes with ALPS from data captures ~ Attendance for classes v College averages ~ Retention / Achievement / Success v Course Benchmarks on Pro Achieve ~ % accuracy measure of predicted v actual grades

  11. The future • Develop the parent portal so that parents can access all of this data on-line (subject to student approval) • Looking to relate all of the data capture data to Pro Achieve to enable us to get success rate/retention/achievement/high grades based upon the current ILR benchmarked against National Averages, to enable managers to monitor the current College position
