  2. California Crash Medical Outcomes Data Are Online http://EpiCenter.cdph.ca.gov The California Department of Public Health has a data resource for traffic safety professionals. The Crash Medical Outcomes Data (CMOD) project is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. CMOD probabilistically links police traffic crash reports with records from coroners, hospitals, and emergency departments. Currently, the data set includes linked nonfatal victims for 2007, 2008, and 2009. More recent years of nonfatal data will be added soon.

  3. Two Major Project Goals • Link crash records with death, hospitalization, and ED records data • (Integration) • Provide CMOD data through the CDPH, Safe and Active Communities Branch, EpiCenter -Injury Data Online Query • (Accessibility)

  4. CMOD project is based on NHTSA CODES model. It links data from 2 of the 6 (SHSP) TRCC components: crash and injury SWITRS ED Inpatient Death

  5. California Crash Medical Outcomes Query System To access the data at the EpiCenter online query system go to http://EpiCenter.cdph.ca.gov . The novelty of this data query system includes: • A single dataset for online query http://epicenter.cdph.ca.gov/ReportMenus/CrashMedicalOutcomesTable.aspx • The ability to cross-tabulate by many variables to see how victim characteristics and crash circumstances affect the victim’s medical outcome. • The ability to create thousands of different custom tables.

  6. Victim Characteristics • Age (single year) • Age (5-year groups) • Race/ethnicity • Sex • Drug or alcohol abuse diagnosis

Crash Circumstances • Year • Month • Day of the week • Time (3-hour intervals) • Vehicle type (auto, truck, bicycle, etc.) • Type of collision (rear end, sideswipe, vehicle/pedestrian, etc.) • Primary collision factor (speed, right of way, DUI) • Safety equipment used • Seating position • Region of California • Alcohol-involved crash • Drug(s)-involved crash • Crash role • Driver • Passenger • Motorcyclist • Bicyclist • Pedestrian

  8. Medical Outcomes • Primary diagnosis (fracture, open wound, internal, etc.) • Primary body part involved (brain, thorax, arms, etc.) • Disposition on discharge (normal, transfer to nursing care, etc.) • Expected source of payment (private insurance, Medi-Cal, uninsured, etc.) • Length of stay
