  2. Overview • The Wadden Sea is a sub-section of the North Sea, covering the northern sea shore of Germany and the Netherlands. • The waters of the Wadden Sea are of the Arctic Ocean. Reasons for Inclusion • The Wadden Sea fulfils three of the ten criteria used to select UN World Heritage Sites: • To record a major stage in Earth’s history; • To represent an ongoing development of life on Earth; • To contain significant natural habitats and exhibit biological diversity. In all of these areas, the Wadden Sea is said to hold... Outstanding Universal Value

  4. The Mud Flats • The Wadden Sea gets its name from the Dutch word ‘wad’ – in English, ‘mud flat’. At low tide, the coast is full of muddy terrain with a thin layer of water overtop. Photo: Siebrand (2006)[Reproduced under the Creative Commons Share-Alike license]

Flora and Fauna Every nature lover owes it to themselves to experience the over five thousand species of birds, shellfish, mammals, plants, and fish that can be found in and around the Wadden Sea’s many beaches, flats, grasslands, and waters.
