  1. Living Against the Grain “Signs of Change” 1 Peter 4-5 Page 1890

  2. Last Week: • The difference between resuscitation and resurrection. • Jesus was resurrected and at baptism we made the “pledge of a good conscience” (vs 21) and we have been raised to a newlife not just our old life. • Following Jesus with this new life often means living against the grain.

  3. Evidence of the Resurrection • What do you think is the best evidence of the resurrection? • No body has been found. • That persecution of the early disciples. • The influence of Christianity. • Your changed life and focus on the kingdom.

  4. Bernice’s Concern • “You can not handle two chapters!” • Follow in your Bible and we will be looking at the phrases and statements that identify the signs of a new, resurrected, life.

  5. Signs of a Changed Life • The Premise: • 1Pe 4:1 Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin. 2 As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.

  6. Signs of a Changed Life • The Proof: • 4:4 We do not join into what we used to. • 4:6 We live our lives in expectation of judgement. • 4:7 We are clear minded, self-controlled, and people of prayer.

  7. Signs of Change • 4:8-10 We love each other deeply and show it in forgiveness, hospitality, and using our gifts for others. • 4:11 We know and speak God’s word, we serve by God’s strength so God is praised. • 4:12-13, 16 We are not surprised by suffering but rejoice in our connection to Jesus.

  8. Signs of Change • 4:17 We are prepared for judgement and feel compassion for those who are not ready. • 4:19 We are committed to our creator and we will continue to do good. • 5:1-4 We have godly expectations for Elders and we are thankful for those who serve, and have served in that capacity.

  9. Signs of Change • 5:5 We raise our young men to honour God and learn from their elders. • 5:5-6 We demonstrate humility because we understand the danger of pride. • 5:7 We cast our anxiety on Jesus because he cares for us.

  10. Signs of Change • 5:8 We are self-controlled (2nd time!) and alertly aware of the Devil and his schemes. • 5:9 We stand firm in the faith in order to resist the Devil and know we are not alone. • 5:10-11 we trust in God’s power and timing to restore us, make us strong, firm, and steadfast.

  11. Signs of Change • 5:13 We have peace in knowing that we are in Christ, and connected to others, who are trying to live against the grain.

  12. Examining the Evidence • People are looking for signs of a resurrected life, and when they do not see them that counters the evidence.

  13. Evidence of Resurrection • What evidence do you present to the world that Jesus rose from the dead andresurrected you as well? • What is your best evidence? • Where do you contradict the evidence?

  15. Thank You • For walking together against the grain of a society that does not know God or honour his word.

  16. Hebrews 3:12-14 • See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. 14 We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first.
