2. Introduction • This presentation will be a discussion of current research being done by librarians at the University of Missouri Kansas City in an effort to create useful profiles of liaison teaching faculty activities and interests. • Academic librarians need to assist faculty with teaching, research and publishing. • Liaisons need to have a lot of information about faculty needs involving their research, classes they teach and collections needs. • It is important to have a method to collect information in a systematic way to make this information available and useful. • One way to accomplish this is to create faculty profiles in a database of information about faculty to continually inform yourself about faculty needs.

3. Methodology • Analyze university’s academic environment. • Determine the scope of data you needed to accumulate. • Find analyzable data. • Collect information in a usable format – Make it easy to review the profiles. • Use profiles to find opportunities to be involved with and support faculty members and their departments.

4. Literature Review • The relationship between faculty and librarians is changing as information technology changes. (Ithaka 2013) • Survey liaison departments about their needs and create a database of information to use for faculty profiles.(Lewis 2002) • In developing a liaison program, librarians devised a systematic way of collecting faculty information. (Ferree2009) • Using data alone to make decisions about liaison programs is not sufficient. There is a need to directly ask faculty what they need. (Arendt 2012)

Sources of Information • Faculty and departmental web pages. • Course catalogs, new courses, schedules, curriculum and syllabus. • Reference transcripts, such as “Gimlet” at UMKC libraries. • Data about subject Libguides usage. • Citation analysis of faculty publications & create RSS feeds to find when faculty publications are cited. • Faculty professional associations. • Collections data - analyze collections needs, note in profiles. • One on one discussion with faculty& students. • Faculty Surveys, internal and public.

Suggestions • Solicit curricula and keep records of class schedules. • RSS/Alert – latest developments, citations of their publications, keep up-to-date of other figures in their fields • Examine Reference Transcripts - Gimlet • Keep Records of Material Requests. • Sign on their departmental listserv. • Keep notes of interaction with faculty. • Follow university news and publications. • Open access and institutional repository

15. Conclusion • Academic libraries are seeking new ways to assist and serve their faculty members with teaching, research, publishing and promotions. • By identifying specialized needs of individual faculty and research groups, librarians can apply new information technology and research methods to meet faculty demands. • Follow their research interests and publication/presentation records for better collection development. Keep up-to-date with what faculty members are doing/citations analysis. • Establishing an active teaching and research profile for teaching faculty will help librarians focus on what they do rather than waiting for them to ask for assistance from the library. Turn passive library requests into proactive service. • Form a stronger bond between the faculty and the library.
