Effects of the Great Depression: • Crash of stock market • Severe unemployment (25% - 30% of the working population) • Different working sectors adversely affected (e.g. heavy industries and farming) Subsequently, crime rates went up, and activities like gang fights were common • Shattered many people’s hopes and dreams of living a comfortable life (The American Dream) • There were major Impacts on different working sectors: • Heavy industry • Farming industry (Prices dropped by as much as 50%) • Manufacturing industry • Trading industry • Mining and Logging Industries The Great Depression was caused by the stock market crash in the U.S, 1929 (Wall Street Crash) Caused a domino effect as the depression spread to other countries, causing their economies to suffer too

The introduction and final parts of the story are located close to the Salinas river. The location was described to be an eden-like one Survived through the Great Depression era -Motivation for novels dealing with rural labour (Of Mice And Men)

Intellectual disability comprises of many disabilities • Learning disabilities • Dyslexia (Spelling/Reading) • Dyscalculia (Math) • Dysgraphia (Writing) • Dyspraxia (Fine-motors; Hand-eye coordination) • Autism • Down syndrome • Neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson) • Dementia (Alzheimer) • Brain injuries Brain injuries: Cognition is not affected; only motor skills are affected – Still able to carry out daily activities Learning disabilities: Speed at which this people learn is relatively slow – Still able to communicate with one another Neurodegenerative diseases: Does not really affect cognition, but severely affects motor skills Dementia: Includes memory loss and the disability to communicate properly. It is irreversible Did You Know • Characteristics of people suffering from mental retardation: • Low IQ, below 70 (Not all the people who have an IQ below 70 are classified as mental retarded) • Lack the required social skills to function in their environments (1 being most, 5 being least)

MIGRANT EXPERIENCE • Workers had to move to California in hopes of earning a job, after the droughts in the 1930s, where the farms they worked in were abandoned. • The mild climate in California seemed to make it a “promised land” • However, many migrants still found it hard to feed themselves as there was a wage reduction due to the amount of workers. • The migrant workers faced discrimination from the Californian farmers because of their race and culture.

WORKING CONDITIONS • The working conditions for the workers were also very poor, and they had to endure living on the bare minimum of food. • Many strikes took place, as the wages paid and conditions on farms were unsatisfactory. • The bosses were often known for taking advantage of their employees, as they had little rights and were fighting for money to survive.
