Foreign Relations • 1949 – 1970 acknowledged internationally as the official country - ROC • 1971 withdrew from UN and its position in the Security Council • 1978 The United States officially cut ties with ROC (One-China Policy) • Present Taiwan still maintains official diplomatic relations with 23 sovereign nations mostly in Central America and Africa.

Economy • 1950 – 1970 promotion of Taiwanese exports • 1970 -2000 Quick industrialization and Rapid growth “Taiwan Miracle” (one of 4 Asian Tigers) • 2001 into recession,first negative growth since 1947 • 2012 Foreign reserves: $3,992.16 billion (Oct 2012, ranked 4th) • GDP has averaged about 8% growthduring the past three decades. • Taipei 101, was the tallest building in the world (2004-2010) currently 3rd tallest in the world.

  15. Socio-Cultural • Distinctive blend of Chinese , Japanese, and Western influences • Popular sports include basketball and baseball. Cheerleading performances and billiard are quite fashionable. • Karaoke, drawn from contemporary Japanese culture, is extremely popular in Taiwan, where it is known as KTV • Food • Entertainment
