Being an Academy • An Independent State Funded School • 208 Academies open in September 2009 • 400 is the target • Independent of the LA but accountable to the DCSF • Re-Branding to re launch the Academy in the Community • Uniform, Name, Logos-a new start • Specialism-Sport and Business • Emphasis upon English, Maths and ICT • Expected to look for new solutions to Transform not just improve

Every member of staff has had a 1 to 1 interview 96% have answered that they are positive about the Academy Full Support of the Wyvern Governing Body Enthusiastic role being played by the Student Council Feasibility approved by the minister-December 2009 Project Steering Group Includes DCSF, PM, CLF and Wyvern Governor reps Academy will be approved by Ministers Change of Accountability What Progress has been made within the School so far?

Wyvern staff will join Federation staff on Leadership Training Inclusion team visit to Bristol Brunel Academy-February 12 Curriculum Leaders working with CLF Curriculum Leaders NQT Training sessions with CLF staff-February 11 CLF Conference on July 2 2010 Wyvern SLT meeting with CLF SLT Wyvern parents & Students to visit Bristol Academies to get flavour of CLF and Learning in an Academy Planned for week of 19 April Getting the Wyvern Community engaged with the CLF

If we do all this, what are the gains for staff? • Enhanced training opportunities • Enhanced Career Opportunities • Access to time spent in another school without having to leave existing role • Access to ideas and strategies that are working to improve standards • Shared resources with other colleagues which over time will reduce duplication • CLF Website and VLE • A “pool” of talent from PGCE and GTP students

If we do all this, what are the gains for students? • 14-19 more choice and diversity within the curriculum-Enhanced links with Weston College and the CLF • Access to the best teaching strategies across 4 schools • Exploiting the UWE link to get more CLF students to University • Links with Rolls Royce for students focused on Science and Technology • Student Projects and Programmes in Bristol for a range of student groups • Chance to shape the future of the school and the new building

In Conclusion… • Fresh start for Wyvern with the aim of making it the most successful school in North Somerset • New School Building-2012-13 • Additional Resources targeted at the classroom giving students access to new courses and new opportunities • To lead the way and be the first Academy in North Somerset • To be sponsored by a school based federation rather than a business

Closure Process • North Somerset is pleased to support the establishment of the new Wyvern Academy • The closure process we are now following will not lead to the end of a school on this site – it is a process that must be followed to enable changes to be made • Before the Academy can be created, the current ‘owner’ of the school – the Council - has to agree that Wyvern Community School in its current legal form will cease

  25. Closure Process so far • We are currently in the 1st stage of a 3-stage process that started in September 2009 and will end on Friday 12th February 2010 • We are interested and want to hear your views and comments about this change

  26. Next steps… • The Council will consider all views and comments • If the right way forward, a Statutory Public Notice (Stage 2) will be published in the local press and other public areas. From the date of publication (probably around 18 February 2010) there will be a further 6 weeks consultation period when everyone can continue to make their views known

  27. Next steps… • In April/May 2010 the Council's Executive Committee or their elected representative will make the decision either to close the school (to enable it to become an Academy), or to keep it open in its current form • If a decision to close Wyvern Community School is made, it will only be carried out if the request of the Cabot Learning Federation to create the Academy (made to the Secretary of State) is successful
