  1. The System Clock • Small Ceramic or metal component with fins on its surface that absorbs and ventilates heat produced by electrical projects. • The pace of a system clock is called the clock speed, it is measured by the number of ticks per second.

  2. Computer Processor • Tells the computer what actions to do and not do. The speed by which these tasks are accomplished depends on the computer processor’s speed.

  3. Heat Sinks • Small ceramic or metal components with fins on its surface that absorbs and ventilates heat produced by electrical components. • Some are part of the processor chip, some are on the top are side of the chip.

  4. Heat Pipes • Small cooling device used to cool processors in notebook computers. • Smaller than the heat sinks.

  5. Liquid Cooling Technology • A continuous flow of fluid such as water and glycol. • Process that transfers the heated fluid away from the processor to cool the liquid and then returns the cooled fluid to the processor.

  6. Parallel Processor • Processing method that uses multiple processors simultaneously to execute a single program or task. • Some use dual core processors or multiple core processors

  7. Power Supply • Component of the system unit that converts wall outlet AC power to the DC power that is used by a computer. • If the power supply is not providing the necessary power, the computer will not function properly

  8. Bays • Opening inside the system unit in which additional equipment can be installed. • A bay is different from a slot. • Rectangular openings called drive bays typically hold disk drives.

  9. Types of expansion buses • PIC bus- Peripheral Component Interconnect Bus: is a high speed expansion bus that connects higher speed devices • AGP- Accelerated Graphics Port: is a buss designed by Intel to provide the speed with which 3D graphics and video transmit. • USB- Universal Serial Busand FireWire bus are buses that eliminate the need to install cards in expansion slots.

  10. Buses • Electronic channel that transfers electronic bits internally within the circuitry of a computer, allowing the devices both inside and attached to the system unit to communicate with each other.
