Bender,  MA, MLS,  AHIP & Lisa Hardman DNP, BC-ADM, CDE Health Sciences Library and West Virginia University School of Nursing, Morgantown, WV PROJECT OVERVIEW OBJECTIVES • Course: Nursing 715 Scientific Underpinning • Doctor of Nursing Practice Program • Synchronous and Asynchronous Online Course • DNP Program Evaluation Identified Many Students Lack • Understanding of Distance Education Library Services • Skills to Access eReserves • Knowledge Regarding APA Formatting and Plagiarism Prevention • Knowledge of How to Navigate Library Catalogs and Databases • Form Team with the Departmental Librarian Liaison an Nursing Faculty • Introduce Information Literacy Principles into Nursing 715 in the Online Environment • Develop an Online Library Orientation Specific to the Needs of the Distance Education Student • Distance Education Eligibility • Mountain Lynx, • ILLiad, • eReserves, • Provide Plagiarism Prevention Training • Provide Student Instruction on Searching Databases and Periodicals Specific to the needs of the Student and Program • CINAHL • Cochrane • RefWorks • Create an Active Learning Assignments to Enhance the Genomics Learning Team Assignment and Scientific Underpinning Paper INTRODUCTION OF INFORMATION LITERACY TO STUDENTS • Librarian Integrated into Course • Contact Information on Syllabus • First Class – Introduction of Information Literacy to Students • WVU eCampus 715 Home Page Included an Course Section for Information Literacy • Students Post Their Questions about Information Literacy to the Faculty and Librarian. • Librarian Has Access to the Course to Respond to Students • Information Literacy Tutorials Add Graphics STUDENT FEEDBACK TUTORIALS/ASSIGNMENTS • 90% of the Student Identified that the Information Literacy Material Helped Them to Be Successful in their Coursework • Some Student Comments: • At first, I was terrified of the on-line library, I still struggle but am more comfortable, the on-line librarians are so helpful. • My computer skills have been strengthened by our course assignments. Navigating through the library resources has been challenging and at times frustrating. I can say at least I am not where I used to be in the learning curve. I am getting better.
