DEFINING COMMUNICATION • Communication is the successful transmission of information through a common system of symbols, signs, behavior, speech, writing or signals between two or more persons. • Communication is also a process by which information is exchanged between individuals (or groups) through a common system of symbols, signs or behavior. • Communication is the activity of conveying information through the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information, as by speech, visuals, signals, writing, or behaviour.

It can also be defined as the exchange of ideas, opinions and information through written or spoken words or actions. • It is the meaningful exchange of information between two or a group of people. • Communication is "any act by which one person gives to or receives from another person information about that person's needs, desires, perceptions, knowledge, or affective states.

  4. We can therefore deduce that communication is a two-way process: • Receiving information via receptive skills (listening / reading) • Sending information via expressive skills (speaking / writing)

  5. Communication takes on many forms and as such may be looked at more specifically according to the purpose it serves, i.e.: • Process definition • Transactional definition; and • Technical definition

  6. Process Definition • Communication is a complex and dynamic process of exchanging meaningful messages. It tells us about interpretation and meaning.

  7. Transactional Definition • This defines communication as a transactional process of exchanging messages and negotiating meaning to establish and maintain relationships

  8. Technical Definition • Communication is defined as the transmission of messages from one person/place to another. • It tells us about the technical means/machinery through which communication is transmitted.
