Computer Assisted Instruction(CAI) Computer-based education (CBE) and computer-based instruction (CBI) are the broadest terms and can refer to virtually any kind of computer use in educational settings. Computer-assisted instruction (CAI) or Computer Aided Instruction (CAI) is a narrower term and most often refers to drill-and-practice, tutorial, or simulation activities. Computer-managed instruction (CMI) Computer-managed instruction is an instructional strategy whereby the computer is used to provide learning objectives, learning resources, record keeping, progress tracking, and assessment of learner performance.

8. What is CAI ? • A self-learning technique, usually offline/online, involving interaction of the student with programmed instructional materials. • Computer-assisted instruction (CAI) is an interactive instructional technique whereby a computer is used to present the instructional material and monitor the learning that takes place. • CAI uses a combination of text, graphics, sound and video in enhancing the learning process. • CAI refers to the use of the computer as a tool to facilitate and improve instruction. CAI programs use tutorials, drill and practice, simulation, and problem solving approaches to present topics and they test the student's understanding.

9. Origin of CAI ? • After the development of a small commercial computer in U.S.A to process census data – around 1960 • Development of PLATO (Programmed Logic for Automatic Teaching Operations) - around 1964 • Development of computerized tutorials in arithmetic and reading for elementary school children by Patrick Suppes of Stanford University in 1966 and infact he was considered to be the father of CAI.

10. Basic assumptions of CAI • CAI is suitable for all type of teaching and learning activities. • As the learners’ performance is going to be recorded automatically in the computer memory, immediate feedback can be provided to the learners by the teachers and also the teachers can use the data in making the best teaching strategy for the learner in future. • CAI can be provided simultaneously even for 4000 students and thereby it facilitates individualized instruction.
