Radiation Protection Authority of Zimbabwe RPAZ is the regulator of the peaceful uses of nuclear and radiation technology and was formed through the Radiation Protection Act [Chapter 15:15] of 2004, an Act administered by the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs in the Office of the President and Cabinet Vision • To be a world class regulator in protecting people and the environment against radiation effects Mission Statement • To regulate the peaceful use of radiation in an impartial and transparent manner which protects the health and promotes the safety of occupationally exposed workers, members of the general public and the environment from radiation effects.

  7. Modules for Cycle 3(SARIS) • Core Questions, • Occupational exposure control • Control of Medical Exposure • Public and Environmental Exposure Control • Emergency Preparedness and Response • Safety and Security of Sources • Transport of Radioactive Materials

  8. Challenges: • Training / understanding: training has got to be hands-on and it was difficult to get the whole team together and train them at once. In the end two teams were set up and training delivered separately. • Personnel: large numbers of personnel needed if you are to strictly have responders and analysers distinctly different. • Time: completing the 1st cycle is really time consuming • Involving other organisations in the self-assessment was difficult

Achievements • Self-assessment results co-opted as one of the organisation’s performance indicators in annual performance appraisal as part of Results Based Management • Ability to track achievements (very motivating) and outstanding areas (systematically points to areas that need attention) • Better awareness and appreciation of the regulatory infrastructure, roles and responsibilities of the regulatory body by the Radiation Protection Board and the Government • Improved staff knowledge of the IAEA Standards, improved support from the fiscus, improved Government commitment, Strategic Plan (2012-2016) • Improved organisational structure and staffing levels • Team building • Effective independence of the regulator through the re-assignment of the Act from the Minister of Health to the Minister for Presidential Affairs • Initiation of the process of revision of the Act to make it more comprehensive and further align it with international standards
