Schools: 776 • All management Schools : 1279 • Total Students at Elementary Level :-125330

About Sikkim: In Brief • Least populous state in India • Second smallest state in terms of area (after Goa 3702sq km) • Most beautiful and strategically important states of the Indian union • Unique distinction of more females than males at different levels of education • 8th state and 2nd NE state having best GER at Higher Education

  5. SOME OF THE MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS MADE BY THE DEPARTMENT • Re-introduction of Pre-Primary classes in Govt. Schools. • No gender discrimination M&F Lit Dif 10%, NA 16.68% • Timely Distribution of free Textbook and Uniform under RTE with the financial assistance from MHRD. • Up-gradation of Schools , CBSE affiliation. • Introduction of Lesson in Law • Orientation Programme to the Students and Teachers. • Quality measures: Content change, Revision, Qualified teachers • QCI, NABET agreement • Assistance to Minority Educational Institutions through MHRD. • Science Stream in all Sr. Sec. Schools.

SOME OF THE MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS MADE BY THE DEPARTMENT • Winter Coaching Camp-bagged 1st position in class X and XII. • Reward to 1st 2nd and 3rd toppers of class X, XII (Huma,Sci,Com,Voc) • More Scholarship to Science graduates (Hike from Rs 1200 to 1600) • Introduction of B.Sc stream in Namchi Degree College (150). • 2nd Campus for Gangtok Degree College (200) • Coaching for UPSC Exam, SSC exam (96+11). • Vocational Education as MHRD approved • Accepted GOIs NEET and JEE to avail All India quota in addition to the available quota seats to the State. • Research and innovation: More Scholarships for Ph.D and M.Phil • Concentrating on e- Learning: Computers to students • KGBV established with the financial assistance from MHRD with 202 Students

Awards received by state for its excellence in Education sector • State is conferred with Commendation certificate from QCI for the initiatives taken by the State for Quality Education, Bridging the infra-structure gap and timely distribution of study materials. • India Today’s Best performing State in the field of Elementary Education (under small state category) for the year 2011 • Best North-Eastern state Education Department award in the National level painting competition 2012-13 on Energy conservation

  18. Special Trainings and its Centres 4 STRs are being run by NGOs at different districts. Out of 1044 Out of School Children , 893 Children enrolled in STR Centre and 619 Children have already been Mainstreamed during 2012-13. Special Training Materials have been prepared and provided to all the Centres.

  21. Appointment of Resource Persons • Appointed 54 Resource Persons (Subject Experts) to provide on-site supports to the teachers at Sub-divison level. • Appointed 18 Inclusive Education Volunteers to provide support to teachers to handle differently abled children in the class.

  22. Community Mobilisation The Hon’ble Chief Minister alongwith the Cabinet Minister, MLAs , HODs and Officers of HRDD in order to sensitize the students, teachers, parents, SMCs, PRI on RTE interacted directly with them in three districts. In his interaction he highlighted the provision of RTE act and the vision behind it. The teachers were directed to implement provision of RTE act in letter and spirit.

Strengthening (Augmentation) of Block Resource Centre • BRCs are equipped with computers desktop and peripherals, one each laptop, LCD projector, LCD screen, dot-matrix and laser printer, Xerox machines to enable them to serve as teacher training centres. • Strengthened with manpower • Provided annual grants (1 lakh per BRC) • Provided furniture (1 lakh once in 5 yrs) • Provided TLM Grant (10,000/- per BRC)

  27. Computer Aided Learning • Provided computers and peripherals to schools • Provided trainings to teachers to use computer as teaching learning aid

Revision of Textbooks • Revised Curriculum and Textbooks of primary classes (Classes I to V) to ensure burdenless and trauma free learning of children • Half yearly Term-wise Textbooks i.e. Term – I and Term – II for all subjects for Primary classes. Textbooks are shared with Ed.CIL • Books are developed by SCERT and published by Private publisher to ensure timely distribution of textbooks • State is using NCERT Textbooks for upper primary classes except English and languages • The Text-Books have been revised with the inclusion of adolescent issue, disaster management , consumer organic agriculture as per RTE act.

Free Uniform and Free Textbooks • All the children attending elementary classes are provided free textbooks amounting Rs. 150.00 per child per year under SSA • All the children attending elementary classes are provided free uniform Rs. 400.00 per child per year with the financial Assistance from MHRD.

  35. Civil Works • Achieved Physical progress for the works sanctioned in 2011-12, 2012-13 (Separate Girls toilets 68, Boundary wall at vulnerable locations 4040 Mts, Electrification 82 schools, HMs rooms, Addl class rooms, New PS East, Upgraded UPs • Financial progress is very poor

Training and Meeting of School Management Committee • Constituted School Management Committee as per the guidelines of RTE Act 2009 • Trained 2500 members of School Management Committee on the process of Preparation of School Development Plan • Schools are conducting monthly meetings of School Management Committee to encourage community involvement in school management.
