  5. Hardships and Challenges • From the beginning, the voyage of the Armada de Molucca, Magellan’s Portuguese Nationality caused many problems, the Spanish public was outraged that a Portuguese commanded their ships. The Armada’s crew destructed their leader. Armada took 98 days to pass the Pacific Ocean and there was no food or water so most crew members fell in and died of starvation or scurvy. • After 4 months the Armada sailed into the Philippine Islands. Magellan Persuaded the king to be Christian. Magellan continued his conversions in the island of Cebu, Where he and his crew were treated with feasts. The leaders of a nearby island of Mactan refused to convert & Magellan showed them how powerful he was by burning a Mactan village to the ground. He became involved in a rivalry between the Cebuans & the peoples of the island of Mactan. Magellan arranged to fight the Mactans believing that 1 of his men equaled 100 natives in battle. He thought he could easily over power them. Instead thousands of Mactan natives, armed with poisoned tipped arrows & spears, fought just 60 of Magellan's men.
