  4. OPENING STATEMENT My learning experience as a leader began first semester in GCH 104 and has carried over to second semester in HDF 190. One of the first things I learned were my strengths and knowing what they are has helped me understand what kind of leader I am. At this point of the leadership minor, I learned there are many important things I can use as a leader in the future. For know I am concentrating on being a good follower and realizing that leadership is a process and requires many people and not just one person.

Student will demonstrate practice of the personal code of ethics Target Class: HDF 190 Additional experiences: The Office ethics worksheet In our HDF 190 FLITE we practiced the code of ethics by watching an episode of The Office. The episode had an “Ethics” convention and it also portrayed many examples of knowing right from wrong. After we watched the episode, we had a class conversation on some of the examples that were presented and talked about if they were right or wrong. It was a fun way to practice ethics because it was in a way that kept us interested. In the end, to me, this showed me that everyone has ethics and they are necessary to help you know right from wrong. Making the right decisions is one of the most important things to keep in mind not only as a leader but also as a citizen.

Student will show knowledge of the “Relational Leadership” model by Komives, McMahon & Lucas Target class: HDF 190 Additional experiences: Relational Leadership diagram The diagram has four components and each component has a Knowing, Being, and Doing explanation. The components are Inclusive-of all students, staff, and diverse points of view; Empowering-of self, group members, and others involved; Purposeful-having and individual commitment to the position, the students, staff, job tasks, and other constituents; Ethical-driven by values and standards of leadership which is “good” in nature; and Process-oriented-how the group goes about building and maintaining a team. My evidence is the diagram, which explains in further detail what each component means and what it stands for stands for.

  7. SECTION 2 (cont.) Leadership Theory and Models 34. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the “4 V’s” theory of leadership by Grace (Center for Ethical Leadership) Target Class: HDF 190 Additional Experiences: Code of ethical leadership worksheet The 4 V’s consist of voice, vision, value, and virtue. The first is voice which could mean giving my opinion but also listening to everyone else’s. Vision is have a view on the future and how you can change it for the better if need be. Values have to do with a persons beliefs and morals, ethics. And finally Virtue means being open minded.

Critical Thinking 69.Student will show knowledge of principles of critical thinking (logic is used in this minor) Target Class: Com 100 Additional Experiences: Read it from the book and also used it during group projects In com 100 we learned about critical thinking because it is a key aspect of group work. Critical thinking is examining ideas reflectively and carefully in order to decide what you should believe, think, or do.

Student will describe personal examples of membership skills in use Target class: Institute Additional experiences: Ropes course At leadership institute before the beginning of the year, we had many activities presented to our group. A lot of the activities came in the ropes course, which is really when a persons skills showed. We had to know how to utilize individual persons skills in ways that are beneficial for the group. Some people had the brains and some people had the strength. Both came in handy on the ropes course. One challenge in particular was the spider web. We had to fit through a bunch of criss-crossed ropes, one person at a time, and only one person could go through a hole. We had to plan it out so that the smaller people went through the smaller holes and the bigger people could hold them up and support them. We had a lot of great ideas as a group and we all showed individual talents.
