  2. Adhesive Bonding There are two types • TYPE 1 – Wetting of Liquid • Bond created by surface tension forces • Undermines surface roughness • TYPE 2 – Simple Mechanical Interlocking • Adhesive fluid infiltrates pores on the adherend surface • Surface roughness enhances bond

  3. TYPE 1 Adhesive Bonding Example: Material Liquid surface tension wants to pull material together r Adhesive (lv) Material R ΔP = γ Κ, where γ=Surface Energy and Κ=Curvature Pliq – Pair = γlv(1/R – 1/r) = - γ/r (for large R)

  4. TYPE 2 Adhesive Bonding Al2O5 Ta2O5 Examples: Al Ta • Rough on the atomic level. Great for mechanical adhesion • Phosphoric acid is used on Fe to create rough surface which holds soap lubricant to metal for cold working. • Rough surface is bad for corrosion resistance. Solution: Seal surface (paint) or create oxide layer
