  2. Soon after explorers started telling people about America, Europeans started claiming land in America that Native Americans once lived on.

  3. In 1638 New Sweden was formed as the first European colony in what is now Pennsylvania.

  4. New Sweden was a group of forts or settlements along the Delaware River all controlled by Sweden.

  5. People of New Sweden traded with the Native Americans for fur and prospered for several years.

  6. Another colony in the area, New Netherland, also traded with the Native Americans.

  7. New Netherland Peter Stuyvesant, governor of New Netherland, wanted to control the land controlled by New Sweden. New Sweden

  8. In 1655 New Netherland took control of New Sweden. The people of New Sweden, however, were allowed to stay as long as they followed the rules of New Netherland.

  9. The colonies continued to grow, taking away land from the Native Americans.

  10. Many Native Americans also died from diseases brought to America from the Europeans.
