  1. Unit 2: Lesson 4- Galaxies SWBAT: Students will be able to identify and classify the different types of galaxies WOD: intergalactic: Initial Activity: Use the following words to write a funny or creative astronomy story. It’s ok if you don’t know what the words mean, guess! Mini Lesson: What is a galaxy, how does it form? Activity: Identifying the different types of galaxies- partners. Galaxy vocab: • Global cluster • Halo • Disk • Nucleus • Spiral

  2. What is a galaxy? • A large group or cluster of stars held together by gravity. • Made of billions to trillions of stars, gas, and dust. • The universe contains billions of galaxies. Image at http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/galaxy/spiral/2007/41/results/50/

  3. How do galaxies form? • Billions of years after the Big Bang turbulent rotating cosmic clouds of helium and hydrogen collapsed- due to the pull of gravity exceeding outward forces of expansion. • Rotation and gravity shape the galaxy into one of the three types. • Spiral, elliptical, and irregular

  4. Spiral galaxy--Andromeda NOAO/AURA/NSF Images at http://www.noao.edu/image_gallery/html/im0606.html and http://www.noao.edu/image_gallery/html/im0685.html

  6. Irregular Galaxies

  7. The Milky Way Spiral What type of galaxy do you think this is?

  8. Activity: • With your partner: • Read about the different types of galaxies • Fill in the graphic organizer using details from the reading. • Draw an example of each galaxy in the space provided. • Discuss and answer the thought questions.
