  1. When Two Minds Are Not Better Than One

  2. New Testament lesson from an Old Testament Text Proverbs 1: 9 That which has been is that which will be, And that which has been done is that which will be done. So there is nothing new under the sun.

  3. Biblical lessons are eternally relevant Romans 15: 4 For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope

  4. God has shown great patience Exodus 32: 4 He took this from their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool and made it into a molten calf; and they said, “This is your god, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.”

  5. I. God’s people stayed faithful only • when they had a strong godly leader. • A. Moses was a strong and godly leader. • B. Joshua followed the example of Moses • and the commands of the lord.

  6. Joshua 24: 31 Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshuaand all the days of the elders who survived Joshua, and had known all the deeds of the Lord which He had done for Israel.

  7. C.These same qualities are essential in the church today. D.Strong leaders take years to develop. II Timothy 2: 2 The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

  8. II. Israel fell when they mingled • with outsiders. • A. Before entering the land, the people • of Israel were warned.

  9. Exod. 34: 12-16 Watch yourself that you make no covenant with the inhabitants of the land into which you are going, or it will become a snare in your midst. 13“But rather, you

  10. Exod. 34: 12-16... continued are to tear down their altars and smash their sacred pillars and cut down their Asherim 14 —for you shall notworship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous

  11. Exod. 34: 12-16... continued God— 15 otherwise you might make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land and they would play the harlot with their gods and sacrifice to their gods, and someone might invite you to eat of his

  12. Exod. 34: 12-16... Continued sacrifice, 16 and you might take some of his daughters for your sons, and his daughters might play the harlot with their gods and cause your sons also to play the harlot with their gods.

  13. B. Israel didn’t obey the Lord’s command. Judges 2: 1-4 Now the angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, “I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land which I have sworn to your fathers; and I said, ‘I will never break My covenant

  14. Judges 2: 1-4 ... continued with you,  2 and as for you, you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall tear down their altars.’ But you have not obeyed Me; what is this you have done? 3 Therefore I also said, ‘I will

  15. Judges 2: 1-4... continued not drive them out before you; but they will become as thorns in your sides and their gods will be a snare to you.’”4When the angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the sons of Israel, the people lifted up their voices and wept.

  16. C. The consequence of their disobedience was apostasy. Judges 2: 11-12 Then the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Ba’als, 12  and they forsook the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out

  17. Judges 2: 11-12 ... continued the land of Egypt, and followed other gods from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed themselves down to them; thus they provoked the Lord to anger.

  18. Their apostasy led to their downfall. Judges 2: 13-15 So they forsook the Lord and served Baal and the Ashtaroth. 14 The anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and He gave theminto the hands of plunderers who plundered them; and He sold them

  19. Judges 2: 13-15 ... continued into the hands of their enemies around them, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies. 15Wherever theywent, the hand of the Lord was against them for evil, as the Lord had spoken and as the Lord had sworn to them, so that they were severely distressed.

  20. Christians are given the very same admonition : II Corinthians 6:14-18 Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? 15 Or

  21. II Corinthians 6:14-18 ... continued what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? 16  Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God

  22. II Corinthians 6:14-18... continued said, “I will dwell in them and walk among them; And I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 17 Therefore, come out from their midst and be separate,” says the Lord. “And do not touch what is

  23. II Corinthians 6:14-18... continued unclean; And I will welcome you.18“And I will be a father to you, And you shall be sons and daughters to Me,” Says the Lord Almighty.

  24. Few Christians have their faith destroyed by one significant event. Hebrews 2: 1 For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it.

  25. Satan doesn’t always use a frontal attack. Hebrews 3: 12–13 Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

  26. III. God is very patient, but there • is a limit to His patience. • A.Each time Israel repented, God • sent someone to recue them.

  27. Deuteronomy 6: 4-5 Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

  28. Ezra 4: 2-3 They approached Zerubbabel and the heads of fathers’ households, and said to them, “Let us build with you, for we, like you, seek your God; and we have been sacrificing to Him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us up here.”3 But Zerubbabel and Jeshua

  29. Ezra 4: 2-3 ... continued and the rest of the heads of fathers’ households of Israel said to them, “You have nothing in common with us in building a house to our God; but we ourselves will together build to the Lord God of Israel, ...

  30. Some practical applications : • A.There is only one God. I Kings 18: 21 Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people did not answer him a word.

  31. God will be only accept worship from those who seek an exclusive relationship. Matthew 4: 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Go, Satan! For it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.’”

  32. Like Israel, we must never allow those of the world to influence our hearts, our thinking, our values.

  33. Christians must have the courage to stand in contrast with today’s culture.

  34. Ephesians 5: 11-14 Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; 12 for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for

  35. Ephesians 5: 11-14 ... continues everything that becomes visible is light. 14 For this reason it says, “Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you.” Vs. 8 ... You are light in the Lord walk as children of light.

  36. Decide which world you want to be in. Who do you want to spend eternity with? Satan or God

  37. Everyone must make the choice. I John 2: 15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

  38. We cannot even be friends with this world. James 4: 4 You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the worldis hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

  39. The Christian must oppose false religion and erroneous practices. The world says, don’t make an issue; just go along to get along.

  40. ACCEPTANCE OF ERROR DOES NOT MAKE IT TRUTH nor does it make it acceptable to God.

  41. We are coming up on the time of year when Christians more frequently surrender to the world.

  42. Asherah Ba’al

  43. Satan will gladly be “the other woman”, but God won’t..

  44. We must all stay single-minded.
