  2. Objectives • I will understand the actions that people and organizations are taking to help the world

  3. Discussion • What are the some of the biggest problems that people can face in their lives? • Who can help these people?

  4. People who make a difference… Martin Luther King, Jr. is an important person in our history because he fought to make sure that all people are treated equally, no matter the color of their skin. Young people like Adam Braun and Talia Leman have also helped to change the world. They both believe that all people are able to make a difference in the lives of others and that all children deserve an education.

  5. Organizations that make a difference… Organizations like the United Nations are also making a difference. The United Nations is helping people create better lives for themselves. Below is a list of the 8 goals they are working on.

  6. Most importantly…. You can make a difference, too! Wondering How? Talk to people about the problems others face Research more about the issues important to you Let others know about the work non-profits are doing Fundraise for your favorite non-profit

  7. How does Pencils of Promise help others? • Pencils of Promise (PoP) helps by building schools in areas where children need schools. • They also believe in the power that YOU have to make a difference. Because of this, they support students who want to help make a difference in the lives of others.

  8. WHY HELP?... DID YOU KNOW… 75 million children are not attending school world wide

  9. Factors that stop kids from going to school… • Unable to pay for school supplies or transportation • School is too far from home and may be in dangerous area • Culture does not support girls going to school • Children need to be working • Improper sanitation or meals at school • Teachers do not have consistent attendance • Schools do not have proper supplies or facilities • Unfair treatment of certain students based upon their culture • Language barriers between teachers and students
