  1. A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF PHYSICO-CHEMICAL WATER ASSESSMENT OF TAMBACAN RIVER AND BAYUG RIVER

  2. Statement of the Problem Main problem Which river water,Tambacan River or Bayug River has a better water quality in terms of physico-chemical analysis?

  3. Sub problem • What are the results of physical and chemical attributes of the sample in terms of: Turbidity b. pH c.ORP • Is there any significant difference in the turbidity of water in Tambacan River and Bayug River? • Is there a significant difference in the pH of water in Tambacan River and Bayug River? • Is there any significant difference in the ORP of Tambacan River and Bayug River?

  4. Objectives of the Study • This study aims to determine which of the Tambacan River and Bayug River has the better water quality in terms of turbidity, pH, and ORP (physico-chemical property).

  5. Hypotheses of the Study • Ho: Bayug River has a better water quality than Tambacan river. • Ho: There is no significant difference in the turbidity of water between Tambacan River and Bayug River. • Ho: There is no significant difference in the pH of water between Tambacan River and Bayug River. • Ho: There is no significant difference in the ORP of water between Tambacan River and Bayug River.

  6. Significance of the Study • beneficial to the community and to the ecosystem • provide valuable information to people residing near Tambacan River and Bayug River • serve as a wakeup call to the government

  7. Scope and Limitations of the Study • The scope of this study was only to determine and compare the quality of water in Tambacan River and Bayug River. • These assessments are limited only in testing the turbidity by using Secchi disk test, pH level (acidity) by using the pH meter, and Oxidation Reduction Potential by using ORP meter. • Substances that make the water polluted are not included in the study. Other physical and chemical attributes not mentioned are not included. • The study involved a 1 week collection and analysis of data. The effect of weather on amount of pollutants to the pH level, ORP reading, and turbidity were not incorporated in this study. The sources of the contamination were not taken into account in this study also. • To verify if there is a significant difference of turbidity, pH and ORP, t- test was conducted.

  8. METHODOLOGY A. RESEARCH DESIGN • The study dealt with the comparison of water qualities of the Tambacan and Bayug Rivers. • To be able to determine the water quality, three methods are used namely the secchi disk test for the turbidity of water, potential hydrogen (pH) test for acidity determination and the oxidation reduction potential (ORP) test. • The physical attributes measured was turbidity only. The chemical attribute measured were pH and ORP.

  9. Materials and Equipment • 20 pcs container • Meter stick • 200 mL in each water samples(1-10 Bayug river water, 1-10 Tambacan river water) • 20 cm square piece of plywood • Washers • Knot Secchi disk • Drill • Back paint & White paint • pH/ORP meter

  10. General Procedure Water samples were collected from the Tambacan River and Bayug River. The first sample of each river was collected 5 meters from the opening of the river and proceeding samples are collected 5 meters after the previous sample. The water was got at the surface part of the river and was placed in bottles. A total of twenty 200 mL samples were taken (10 for each river). Turbidity was measured at the sampling site. The collected water samples were brought to the IDS laboratory not more than one hour after collecting. This was done in order to get an accurate result on all water attributes.

  11. Statistical Tools • statistical tool this study used is the independent t-test. The t-test is used to compare the Tambacan and Bayug sample means. The t-test assesses whether the means of turbidity, pH, and ORP of Tambacan River and Bayug River are statistically different from each other. To test the significance, a 0.05 alpha in two tailed was set.

  12. Chart 2: Comparison of Turbidity Reading of Tambacan River and Bayug River.

  13. Chart 3: Comparison of pH Reading of the Standard Reading. Tambacan River and Bayug River.

  14. Chart 4: Comparison of ORP Reading of the Standard Reading, Tambacan River and Bayug River.

  15. Table 4: Results of t-test of the physico-chemical attributes of Tambacan River and Bayug River

  16. Turbidity: reject HopH: reject Ho ORP: reject Ho There is a significant difference between the two rivers.

  17. Conclusion After the experiment had been done and data were statistically analyzed, it was concluded that there is a significant difference between Tambacan River and Bayug River. Tambacan River has a better water quality than Bayug River in terms of turbidity, pH and ORP test. Since it is known that these two rivers doesn’t meet the standard water quality in terms of physico-chemical attributes, attention must be given to prevent it from worsening.

  18. The researchers reccomend to future researchers the following: • Continue monitoring Tambacan River and Bayug River and other bodies of water more frequenly to aquire more reliable results. • Monitor other atributes not included in this study to make the results more valid.Tap government and non-government agencies for possible financial grant to support the expences for the laboratory test. • Find other test that are readily available, easy to perform and inexpensive. • Test the electrical conductivity of the water. EC test is one of the most accurate test when testing the physico-chemical attributes of water. • Take more water samples from different depth of the body of water of interest. • Take more water samples in different weather conditions.
