  3. Compare and discuss your notes and writings with a partner. • Turn in the full sheet of paper with all 4 writings on it. School’s Out for the Summer

  4. Look at the definitions on the worksheet provided. • Pay attention not only to the definition but also the commonly used strategies. • On the worksheet, identify an example of each from an article we’ve previously read. • Be sure to include a citation with your example. • Complete ONE of the quickwrites on the worksheet persuading your teacher not to give you homework tonight. • Evens= pathos Odds= logos face cards = ethos Ethos, Pathos, and Logos

Pick ONE of the two following prompts. • Write a short essay answering the prompts in which you use ethos, pathos, and logos. • Consider your audience and the format that is most likely to convince that audience (i.e. a formal letter, speech, editorial article, etc.). • Option 1:You arrive home 20 minutes past curfew and your parent/guardian decides to ground you for 2 weeks as punishment. Persuade him/her to change his/her mind. • Option 2: Your community recreation center could sponsor free lunches for children and teenagers during the summer but does not currently do so. Write an essay in which you convince the director to sponsor free lunches for those children who need them. Using Rhetorical Appeals

Logos • Logical • Uses inductive or deductive reasoning by citing statistics, facts, experts, and evidence • Be rational and give statistics and/or commonly held beliefs; refer to experts and facts that can be supported • When using this type of argument, offer audience examples that are similar to this subject and convince them to draw the conclusion you want. • Review the articles we’ve read recently and identify one example of logos. • Logos Quickwrite: • You arrive home 20 minutes past curfew and your parent/guardian decides to ground you for 2 weeks as punishment. Ethos • Ethical • Speaker establishes self as trustworthy and respectful of audience • Speaker shows he/she is trustworthy and care deeply about the situation and its effect on him/her • Speaker demonstrates he/she has taken time to research topic, establishing credibility • Review the articles we’ve read recently and identify one example of ethos. • Ethos Quickwrite: • You arrive home 20 minutes past curfew and your parent/guardian decides to ground you for 2 weeks as punishment. Pathos • Emotional • Appeal to emotions of audience by describing in detail the effect of a particular situation • Often uses stories with lots of details to provoke emotion • Create a sense of pity, anger, fear, or other emotion in audience • Review the articles we’ve read recently and identify one example of pathos. • Pathos Quickwrite: • You arrive home 20 minutes past curfew and your parent/guardian decides to ground you for 2 weeks as punishment. Using the appeals of logos, ethos, and pathos, write an essay in which you convince the director to sponsor free lunches for those children who need them. As you write the essay, think of the context of the audience (the director) and how best to organize the essay and present your argument to achieve your desired result. • To help, you may want to use the SMELL strategy.
