Caracol, the largest Maya sight in Belize -sits high on Vaca Plateau -once one of the largest Maya cities Belize zoo -31 miles from Belize city -one of the finest zoos in the Americas Ambergris cave -largest of several hundred islands in the northernmost waters of Belize -top tourist destination in Belize Maya ruins of Xunantunich -On a ridge above the Mopan river -near San Ignacio within sight of the Guatemala border

  6. Archaeology • 1. The Maya civilization spread over the area which is today Belize, beginning in around 1500 BCE and thrived there until about 800 CE. • 2. In the late classic period of Maya civilization (before 1000 BCE), as many as 400,000 people lived in Belize. • 3. The Battle of St. George's Caye refers to a military encounter off the coast of what is now Belize lasted from September 3–30 1798. • 4. Slavery was stopped in the British Empire in 1838, but this did little to change working conditions for labourers in the Belize settlement • 5. Many aspects of the Maya culture continue in the area despite nearly 500 years of European domination • 6. Formerly known as the British Honduras until 1981 when it gained its independence from Britain.

  7. Famous artifacts • The Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave has many artifacts but the most famous is the crystal skull.

Political Science/sociology • TYPE OF GOVERNMENT • Belize has a parliamentary democracy government – representatives are elected. • IDEOLOGY-PHILOSOPHY • They believe in freedom of speech, the press are allowed to write what they want without being punished, they were free to believe in their religion and they were allowed to travel without permission from the government.

Sociology • EDUCATION: • PRIMARY: every child goes to school for eight years, two years of infant classes and six standard classes. • SECONDARY: Consists of four years of schooling, many schools in Belize are influenced by church but the government supports these schools. • UNIVERSITY: The University College of Belize was formed in 1986 • POLICE FORCE: • Established in 1886 • In 1902 it was made into a civil police force

  10. Sociology • MEDICAL: • Belize has a mixed medical system with public and private medical facilities • A large number of the doctors in Belize are volunteers from Cuba • They have a fairly good healthcare system, it compares well against Central American countries

  11. Economics • NATURAL RESOURSES: Minerals mined are dolomite, barite (source of barium), bauxite (source of aluminum), cassite (source of tin), and gold. In 1990 limestone was the only mineral resource being used for domestic or export use. • TRADING PARTNERS: Major trading partners include the European Union, Canada, Mexico, and Caribbean Community. • BANKS: Belize has five main banks: The Alliance Bank, the Belize Bank, the Atlantic Bank and two foreign banks - the Caribbean Bank (formerly Barclays) and scotia Bank. • TAX: Corporate tax =35% Personal tax ranges from 15-45% There is no sales tax • Money used today- The Belize dollar • $1.00 Canadian dollar = $1.91 Belize dollars Queen Elizabeth is on their dollar.
