  1. Digestive System Mya, Katie, Zareille, Keylon, Matthew, Chandler, and Tyshonna October 31, 2013 5th grade Science Group Project

  2. Main function of the system • The digestive system’s main job is to break down food change it so that food can enter the blood and get to your cells.

  3. Main parts of the system • Large intestine , small intestine, liver, esophagus, mouth, stomach, and pancreas.

  4. What each part does Each part of the digestive system has a job to do to help you digest food.

  5. Mouth • Chewing is the first step of digestion. The mouth chews all food for you to digest. The mouth has a fluid called saliva which helps soften food for digesting. The teeth help too by crushing food, making it easier to swallow.

  6. Esophagus • The esophagus is a tube that carries food to the stomach. It does this by using a series of muscles in your throat and pushing food down to your stomach.

  7. Stomach • The stomach produces fluids that help digest meals. The stomach is where food sits during digestion. As the stomach’s walls squeeze, fluids mix with food until it is soupy paste. After this, food is ready to leave your stomach.

  8. Small Intestine and Liver • Small Intestine • The pancreas and liver send chemicals here. It gives us more surface area to absorb food. • Liver, Gallbladder, and Pancreas • The pancreas and liver send chemicals to the small intestine.

  9. Large Intestine • The large intestine takes salt and water away from wastes to make it solid. It also holds waste until it is ready to leave the body.

  10. How the system affects other body systems • It affects the excretory system because the food that doesn’t digest is waste. The waste has to leave the body through the excretory system.

  11. How other body systems affect the system • The excretory system carries away the wastes of the digestive system. The circulatory system gives blood to the tissues and organs.

  12. Some diseases of the system • Some diseases of the digestive system are Acid Reflux, Crohn’s Disease, Dehydration, Acid Indigestion, Indigestion, Upset Stomach, and Diarrhea.

  13. Effects of outside/environment factors on the system • One outside effect is smoking. Smoking can damage all parts of the digestive system. Another outside effect is steroids. Steroids make you and parts of your digestive system grow unnaturally.

  14. Some fun facts about the system • 1. We can make up to 3 pints of saliva a day. • 2.It takes your mouth, esophagus, large intestine, small intestine, liver, pancreas, gall bladder, and stomach just to digest a glass of milk! • 3. An average man eats about 50 tons of food just to weigh 150 pounds. • 4.Cooking destroys food enzymes, forcing the body to make its own. Over time, your body tires over this work, and it may lead to indigestion.
