Getting Started • Launching Kurzweil 3000 • Optional “Ask for User on Startup” under Tools and General tab. • Note title bar displays the current User and name of current document • The Kurzweil 3000 Window • User and document name • Standard Windows Application controls-Menu Bar • Four Standard Toolbars-Main, Reading, Study Skills, and Writing • Document Reading Area • Status Bar

  5. Welcome to Kurzweil 3000 • Starting and Stopping Reading • Click the Read button on the toolbar to read the “Welcome to Kurzweil 3000” document. • Click Pause to stop. • Practice reading and stopping with the F3 button.

  6. Adding and removing toolbars • Place cursor over the empty section of the toolbar menu and click the right mouse button to display the toolbar right mouse menu. • The 4 toolbars include: main, reading, writing, and study skills. • Practice adding and removing toolbars, resizing, and adding and removing captions. • You can choose to speak buttons under the Tools Options General tab if this is a needed feature.

  7. Customizing Toolbars • You can add or delete items from your 4 toolbars by going to Tools, Customize, Toolbars • You may also choose to use a preset toolbar for a specific task. To do this, select Tools, Customize, Apply toolbar set and choose the one you prefer.

Ways to get curriculum into Kurzweil 3000 to read and learn • Use the Scan button or Scan menu (available in the Professional version only) • Use Kesi virtual printer option (available with the Professional version) • Use the Read the Web option • Use the Open button or File, Open menu can use with many word processing programs, any .txt or .rtf files. TIF and PDF files can be opened with the Professional version. • Use the New button or File, New menu

Bringing in Test or Worksheet Content • Scan a print version to create an image document • Open the application used to create a document such as word and print it to Kurzweil 3000 by selecting the Kesi virtual printer option in the application’s Print menu. This creates an image document. • Use the Open button to open an .rtf file in Kurzweil 3000. This method creates a text document.

Reading and Reference Tools • Read/Pause Toggle (F3) • Audible/Silent Toggle- Learners can practice silent reading by turning off the audible voice with this toggle • Front and Back buttons- Learners can repeat reading of the text quickly using the Back and Forward buttons or by positioning the cursor at any place in the document and clicking Read.

  11. Reading Toolbar • Reading Modes- Continuous, Self-paced, Word by word Continuous reading will read until you click pause Self paced reading will pause after each reading unit and you will need to click read again Word by word pauses after each word and you click read to read each word.

Reading Unit- Word, Phrase, Line, Sentence, Paragraph, Heading, or Highlight • Specifies what grammatical unit of text is highlighted when reading a document. • Phrase, sentence, and paragraph are useful for reinforcing awareness of the grammatical structure of written language. • Highlights are useful for reviewing highlighted main ideas and supporting details. • Changing WPM- words per minute • Complete exercise on page 26

More Reading Toolbar Controls • Jump to a specific page in a document • Type a page number in the page number box and clicking the mouse in the document area to move. • Use the up and down page arrows. • Clicking the first and last page buttons. • Display thumbnail view to see all pages and then select a page. • Increase/decrease the viewing size using the Zoom arrows. • Display page thumbnail view and select a portion to view. • Exercise page 28

Customizing Auditory Supports • To customize reading supports, go to Tools, Options, Reading. • You can also customize some things directly on the toolbar such as rate of speech, speaker voice, and reading unit. • Under the Options, Reading section you can select to have a word read when double clicked and if the spoken word should be highlighted. • You can also select your web browser

Working with Word Supports • Definition, Synonym, Syllables, Spell • Benefits: • The reference tools are visual and auditory to support learner preferences. • The tools offer independent learning, unlimited repetition and reinforcement. • Dictionaries • You can select from several different dictionaries (including bilingual libraries) and can customize to student needs. • Version 8 and above support picture dictionary libraries as well. • Complete page 37-38

  18. Tools such as Dictionary, Spell Check, Synonyms and Word Prediction can be disabled or enabled for each student according to their IEP. • You can password protect access to the Lock Feature section to prevent a student from enabling access to the feature for the test. • Version 8 and above offers file protection features including file encryption, preventing file printing and copying files. • This can be done under the Tools, Lock Features on the main toolbar.

  19. Tools to Support Writing Process • Writing supports- Use Speak as Typing, Talking Spell Checker, Word Prediction, Vocabulary Lists and Text formatting features to support writing process. • Speak as Typing feature can be turned on/off in the Tools, Options, General tab page. • Spell Checker • You can hear the word spoken out loud, add words to your private spelling dictionary, and edit your private dictionary. • Use Tools, Options, Spell Check to customize the Spell Checker features. • Complete pages 72-73

Word Prediction • Word prediction supports students with spelling and vocabulary difficulties. • Spelling-Provides lists of words after 2 or 3 letters are typed. • Vocabulary- Provides lists of words to choose from to increase vocabulary. • It is used to reduce the number of keystrokes for typists who tire easily. • Word Prediction presents word choices based on Spelling, Frequency, and Recency.

Word lists • Kurzweil 3000 comes with 3 base word lists: • Small (812 words) (Kurzweil uses as default) • Medium (10,004 words) • Large (25,018 words) • Word prediction automatically learns new words that are not in the default word list when you type a new word. • You can use words from topic-specific Vocabulary Lists. • You can also add words to the word prediction list using the Word Prediction Train option. • Complete pages 78-79

  22. Additional Writing support • BrainStorm, Outline, Draft, and Review supports are available. • You can create new or use a template. • These can be found on the writing toolbar, under Write on the Main Menu, and under Open then choose the template.

Study Skills Tools • Highlighter pens • Text extraction • Annotations • Sticky note-Adds rectangular yellow notes to image documents. • Text note- a variation of sticky notes but are transparent and are used to add text to forms worksheets or tests that are image documents • Footnote- indicated by a numbered anchor next to the text • Voice note- indicated by a microphone next to the text • Bubble note- indicated with a ? Anchor next to the text • Bookmarks- used to help readers quickly access specific information. • Highlighter practice page 47-48, 50-52, 55-57

  24. Extract your work • It is possible to extract any notes, highlights, or text that you put inserted into a document. • To do this go under File and Extract. You can choose what it is that you would like to extract and save to another document.

Students can use a number of tools to answer worksheet and test questions. • Highlighter pens, voice notes, and drag and drop text can be used in text files and KESI image documents. • Text motes and Fill-in-the-blank tools can be used if the worksheet, test, or form is a KESI image document. • You do not need to add Text notes or use the Fill-in-the-blank tool in text documents because you can type directly into text documents without inserting notes. • Complete exercise pages 62-63

  26. Saving Content • File, Save As similar to saving files with any Windows software program. • As default it will save under file location as you logon. • You can save files to a shared drive and folder by selecting the drive and folder in the Save As window. • Kurzweil 3000 offers the Universal Library feature that enables you to store documents in a folder that all users on the system (stand-alone or networked) can share. • Documents and be printed, sent from Kurzweil 3000 to recipients through e-mail and also converted to MP3 or WAV audio files. • Complete practice pages 18-19

  27. Saving Student Preferences • A user signing in with a new user name starts with the default settings that Kurzweil 3000 provides for all features. As a user customizes the settings to his or her preferred learning style and strengths, the settings are automatically saved to a preference file associated with the user name. • Complete student profile on page 40-41.
