Farmers take the biggest direct hit from illegal pesticides… • Counterfeit and illegal pesticides pose severe health risks to farmers • Potentially damage/destroy crops and ruin farmer’s livelihood • Leave unknown residues in food crops • Create environmental risks to wildlife, water and soil • Environmental waste problems how do we stop farmers from becoming victims of criminals?

  5. Reducing supply & demand for illegal PPP* Awareness/ Education Prevention Prosecution/ enforcement is essential to deter criminal activity! Prevention and Education are fundamental to reduce demand! SUPPLY & DEMAND REDUCTION Prosecution/ Enforcement *Based on model provided by Police Scotland

Awareness and Education: Goal - reduce supply and demand for illegal PPP • Most effective when authorities and industry combine resources: • Slides, videos, industry and authority collaboration (e.g. Poland) • Authorities and industry reinforce each other’s messages and involve other stakeholders • Farmers become advocates for legal PPPs as a key element of quality food production (e.g. Bulgaria, Romania and Greece) cooperating and helping to stop farmers from becoming victims of criminals

Potential impacts on sustainable food production • Avoid reputational damage for producers and suppliers • Protect reputation of food production in your country • Ensure farmers/growers use only legally registered products • Food export bans • Simple process to mitigate risk and avoid export bans
