  1. Polymer (PFO) SWCNTs Ad PPV (10,0) NT (6,2) NT Universality in the photophysics of single-walled carbon nanotubes and -conjugated polymersSumit Mazumdar, University of Arizona, DMR-0406604 Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and -conjugated polymers are both quasi-1D -electron systems. Ultrafast spectroscopy reveals two distinct photoinduced absorption, PA1 and PA2, in both classes of materials. Our theoretical work demonstrates that the “essential states” model of optical non-linearity, developed originally for the -conjugated polymers, applies also to SWCNTs. PA1 is from the lowest optical exciton Ex1 to a single dominant m1Ag two-photon exciton in zigzag NTs, and to a narrow band of m“1Ag” excitons in chiral NTs. (upper panel) Expr. 2. Universality in the photophysics of single-walled carbon nanotubes and -conjugated polymersSumit Mazumdar, University of Arizona, DMR-0406604 • Education: • One graduate student and one post-doctoral fellow were trained under the program. • The group collaborates with the experimental group of Professor Z.V. Vardeny from the University of Utah on the photophysics of carbon nanotubes and π-conjugated polymers. Graduate students from the experimental group have benefited from the mentoring by the PI. • Aspects of our research, many-electron effects on low dimensional systems, in particular organic materials, have been incorporated in a new graduate course on advanced topics on condensed matter theory at the University of Arizona.
