  1. My Perspectives on the Renewed Framework for Numeracy. by Jo Gotheridge, Ashgate Primary.

  2. The National Numeracy Strategy. • In 1998, 59% of 11 year olds achieving level 4. This rise in achievement was surely attributable to the NNS… But then … The Renewed Framework Why? Why? Why? • In 2005, 75% of 11 year olds achieving level 4.

  3. Workload? “Most change programmes …initiated involved forms of work intensification for teachers…Most change managers had simply added…to the burdens of colleagues.” (Gray, Hopkins, et al, 1999)

  4. However…Try before you buy! • Have a go at a unit of work from the renewed framework and you will begin to see the benefits. Reasons why a change to the framework was crucial also become apparent.

  5. Top 5 reasons why the Renewed Framework works! • Big Picture • Bite sized objectives • Problem solving • ICT • Freedom in planning

  6. The big picture… What is the common link? Time, reading scales and multiples of 5.

  7. ..being pieced together. • As each lesson within a block passes, you will see the children piecing separate pieces of knowledge together to form a clear picture.

  8. Bite sized objectives. • A block of work focusing on ‘time’ may now only focus on working out intervals of time, rather than the whole theme. • This begins to feel far more manageable for teachers and children.

  9. Problem solving. • This was our area of weakness for years. • Ring a bell? • This now comes into every aspect of each block of work . It is woven into the fabric of the renewed framework.

  10. ICT • The framework makes excellent reference to Excel grids, ITPs and other resources.

  11. Freedom in planning. • One of the biggest benefits is that the renewed framework gives freedom back to teachers to adapt the plans to the needs of their class. It is far less rigid.

  12. The light switches on…The penny drops… • With careful planning and effective use of resources, the children will suddenly find “it clicks”.

  13. So in summary… • Don’t feel too scared of change. • Try it yourself and lead from a position of knowledge rather than ignorance. • Use the resources that have been provided, don’t redesign the wheel. • Reap the benefits- have fun!
