  1. The presence of new soldiers from the United States lifted the Allies’ spirit.

  2. The Germans were discouraged.

  3. In Germany, the German people revolted. The German people were tired of war.

  4. Kaiser Wilhelm II fled to the Netherlands.

  5. The Germans established a republic and the new leaders asked for peace.

  6. The Armistice, an agreement to stop fighting, was signed on November 11, 1918.

  7. The Treaty of Versailles, the treaty that formally ended World War I, was signed in June 1919.

  8. The Treaty of Versailles included a war guilt clause that blamed Germany for starting the First World War.

  9. Germany was forced to pay huge reparations.

  10. In addition, France took back Alsace and Lorraine.

  11. Germany’s military forces were greatly reduced.

  12. And the map of Europe was redrawn as several new nations were created.

  13. The German people hated the treaty. The treaty crippled Germany economically and resulted in high inflation and rampant unemployment. The harsh terms of the Treaty of Versailles would not lead to a lasting peace.
