Returning Soldiers • Many soldiers struggled to find work as the factories were not producing war goods anymore • GI Bill: Created the help the veterans adjust to civilian life • Provided money for vets to attend college • Loans to buy a home, farm or business • Baby Boom: A dramatic rise in birthrates after WWII • Families were bigger so they created a demand for products • Minorities and Women: Forced out of jobs for white men • Executive Order 9981: Desegregated the military

New Organizations • The United Nations • Formed to create international peace • Issued the Universal Declaration of Human Rights • Led by the Security Council • Five countries that have veto power • USA, Britain, France, China and Soviet Union • International Monetary Fund (IMF) • Encourage trade and prevent economic crisises • World Bank • Providing loans to countries

Korean War • During WWII Japan occupied Korea • After WWII Korea was divided, like Germany, into the North (Soviet controlled) and South (Allied controlled) • Divided at the 38th parallel • North called itself the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (Communist) • South Korea was called the Republic of Korea (Democratic) • Leads to war

Korean War Cont • June 25, 1950 North Korean troops invaded the South • Soviets and China supported North Korea • Very successful at first and took the capital of Seoul • US wanted to take a stand against Communism • UN Forces were sent in but weren’t enough • Douglas MacArthur was sent in and planned an attack at the port city of Inchon • Able to move out of Inchon and recapture Seoul • American forces were dominating • After recapturing Seoul Americans had to decide if they wanted to stop at the 38th parallel or try to take North Korea • Worried China would send in forces

The Korean War Ends • MacArthur planned to move into North Korea • 260,000 Chinese troops attacked pushing the Americans back to Seoul • MacArthur wanted to go to war with the Chinese by bombing the mainland • Very outspoken against Truman, called for use of atomic bombs. • General Ridgeway was able to stop the Chinese advance and push them back to the 38th parallel • Truman fired MacArthur • Farewell address: “Old soldiers never die; they just fade away.” • War officially ends in July of 1952 • 37, 000 American causalities • 57,000 UN causalities • 2 million Communist causalities
