  1. How to survive your daughte’swedding Whether you are a meticulous Mother of the Bride (MOB) or a frazzled Father of the Bride (FOB), being the parent of a soon-to-be-bride can be stressful, emotional and in many cases, expensive. That’s why we have compiled the following Wedding Survival Guide, to help you stay sane and perhaps even enjoy, your daughter’s big day. 1. Understand your role You may have been planning your daughter’s wedding since the day she was born, however it is important to take your cues for your level of involvement from the bride and groom. Let them know you are there to help whenever they need you, and get them to give you both specific jobs so you can contribute without confusion. 2. Be clear about your budget Many parents choose to contribute financially to their children’s wedding, however it is important to be clear about their expectations and your limitations. Some parents offer a set amount, to be spent by the happy couple as they see fit. Others opt to finance a specific service or component of the wedding ie. the band, the alcohol, the reception. In these cases, it is important to decide on an agreed ballpark amount so that neither party is shocked when the bill comes in.

  2. 3. Guest expectations Just like the budget, be clear from the get-go about your guest expectations. If you are financially contributing to the wedding, you can expect to be able to invite a set number of guests. This will need to be mutually decided upon early on, to avoid upsets at invitation time 4. Dress for success Ensure as Parents of the Bride, your outfits complement the style and theme of wedding. If you really wanted that traditional church affair and are instead on a beach with sand in your shoes, wearing a designer gown complete with four-tiered hoop skirt is just going to make you look silly (not to mention uncomfortable). Similarly, if you were lobbying for the casual Caribbean-style ceremony and have ended up in a chandelier-illuminated chateau, don’t fight back with beach shorts and a coconut bra. 5. Remember who is getting married At the end of the day – and oh, what a long day it can be (!) – it is important to remember that the final decisions for a wedding need to be made by the bride and the groom. This event is about the beginning of their future together. Be sure to retain some perspective and don’t sweat the small stuff. So grab a champagne, bask in the glow of the happy couple and remember, all is fair in love – and weddings!
