  3. Served his country during a time of momentous change in America. The nation was moving ahead economically as large corporations began to dominate production.

  4. The US was growing more urban as millions of immigrants poured into the country from Eastern Europe

  5. These were years of clear economic, social, and cultural change. Grover Cleveland provided honest leadership during his Presidency.

  6. Mayor of Buffalo: Attempted to clean up the corrupt city government. While President, Cleveland pursued a reform agenda.

  7. He instructed officials to cut waste and corruption in their departments. He forced railroad companies to return excess land to the government.

  8. Cleveland’s marriage while president made him the only president to marry in the White House.

  9. One of the heated issues of the period was the continuing debate over money supply in America and the distribution of “cheap money”

  10. After failing to win the election 1888, Cleveland spent the next four years practicing law in New York City

  11. Ran for President again in 1892 and won. Found himself presiding over a nation in deep financial depression, beginning in 1893.
