What is a sentence? • A sentence is a group of words that tells a complete thought. • The words must be in an order that make sense. • Sentences: • BEGIN with a capital letter • END with the proper end mark • HAVE at least one subject AND at least one verb • Who is the sentence about? • What are they doing?

  3. Are these sentences? • Sara and Jon. • Music makes me happy! • And then went home. • The flowers looked beautiful in the vase. • Did you? • Are you and Nate going on the trip? • Max, Tina, and Krystal are on the baseball team.

  4. Are these sentences? (You do, I help) • The snake in the cage. • That frog leaped out of the box! • The belly-up fish. • Did you see that horse?

  5. Types of Sentences • Simple • Compound • Complex • Declarative • Interrogative • Exclamatory • Imperative

  6. Simple Sentences • Contain a subject (who) and a verb (what are they doing?) • Expresses a complete thought • Also known as an Independent Clause • Examples: • A. Some studentslike to study in the mornings. • B. Juan and Arturoplay football every afternoon. • C. Aliciagoes to the library and studies every day. You try: Write a simple sentence in your notes.

Compound Sentences • Contain two independent clauses joined by a coordinator • For And Nor But Or Yet So • Except in very short sentences coordinators always come AFTER a COMMA • Examples: • A.  I tried to speak Spanish, and my friendtried to speak English.  • B.  Alejandroplayed football, so Maria went shopping.  • C.  Alejandroplayed football, for Mariawent shopping. You try: Write a compound sentence in your notes.

  8. Complex Sentences • Contain an independent clause joined by one or more dependent clauses. • Always have a subordinator such as because, since, after, although, or when or a relative pronoun such as that, who,or which. • Examples: • A. Whenhehanded in his homework,heforgot to give the teacher the last page.  • B. The students are studyingbecausetheyhave a test tomorrow. • C. Afterthey finished studying,Juan and Mariawent to the movies.  You try: Write a complex sentence in your notes.

  9. Declarative Sentences • Makes a statement • Ends with a period (.) • Examples: • A. We have five days of school this week. • B. The dog’s collar is blue and shiny. • C. The flowers will be growing soon. You try: Write a declarative sentence in your notes.

  10. Interrogative Sentences • Asks a question • Ends with a question mark (?) • Examples: • A. Are we going on a vacation this summer? • B. Will you be at the party on Saturday night? • C. How much money did Weezy make last year? You try: Write an interrogative sentence in your notes.

  11. Exclamatory Sentences • Shows a STRONG feeling • Ends with an exclamation mark (!) • Examples: • A. I love you very much! • B. Oh my goodness! • C. I hate people who can’t drive! You try: Write an exclamatory sentence in your notes.

  12. Imperative Sentences • Gives a command • Tells you (or someone) to do something • Can end in a period (.) or exclamation point (!) • Examples: • A. Run! • B. Quinton, do your homework. • C. Didi, please collect everyone’s homework. You try: Write an imperative sentence in your notes.
