Understanding the Apprenticeship Levy • It’s been over a year since the Apprenticeship Levy was introduced • The Apprenticeship Levy scheme presents an opportunity to develop the skills of new and existing employee • Now is the time to tap into training opportunities. • Levy funds remain in the Council’s National Apprenticeship Service account for a maximum of 24 months, so from April 2019 we could start to lose funding that could be used to development the skills of new and existing employees.

  3. Understanding the Apprenticeship Levy • This presentation will address the following: • What the Levy can be spent for • How to use Levy funds for your school • Discuss the available apprenticeship standards your school can use

WHAT CAN THE LEVY BE USED FOR? • Apprenticeships only (standards or frameworks) • Cannot be used for wages or expenses. i.e. back filling, staff cover, travel or development costs. • Cannot be used for different types of training, i.e health and safety, first aid or mental health awareness • Levy funds also pay for the end-point assessment of an apprenticeship

Take Advantage of the Opportunities • The Apprenticeship Levy provides Schools with lots of opportunities to develop their staff to meet the needs of the School • Current Skills levels: Schools are being encouraged to think about personal development needs of their staff • Succession Planning – this is an opportunity to upskill your workforce to meet your staffing needs in the future

Additional information • Restrictions: prior attainment restrictions have been lifted (e.g. already have a degree) they can work to a Level 3-7 standard as long as it is in a substantially different occupational area • Apprenticeships are open to anyone over the age of 16 (no age caps) • Functional English and Maths tests may be required. • The Apprenticeship Levy Funding is controlled in the Council’s Digital Apprenticeship Account which includes the contribution of Schools (under Council Control)

  7. Apprenticeship Standards/frameworks can apply to: • New recruits or existing staff • Employees should have a Contract of employment • Minimum 12 months programme or more according to the length of the programme (note: If employed for less than 30 hours a week the programme needs to be extended by a commensurate amount) • The learning has to take place during their normal working hours (or give them the time back) • Requirement of 20% off the job training. • 20% off the job is as little as 15 minute shadowing.

  8. How to use the Levy Funds • Identify training needs your school has • Identify whether you would like to appoint a new staff as an apprentice or train an existing staff on apprenticeship training • The available apprenticeship standards are in the next slides

Office and Management • Business Admin Level 2 – 18 months • Assistant Accountant – Level 3 – 18 months • Business Administration – Level 3 – 18 months • School Business Professional – Level 4 – 18 months • Team Leader/Supervisor – Level 3 – 12 months • Operations/Departmental Manager – Level 5 – 30 months • Chartered Manager Degree – Level 6 – 48 months • Senior Leader Master’s Degree – Level 7 – 24 months

  13. Maintenance • Property Maintenance Operative – Level 2 – 12 months • Facilities Management Supervisor – Level 3 – 18 months
