Chiang and what was left of his army flee to island Taiwan, set up “Republic of China” D. “Loss of China” = containment policy fails E. Stalin requests UN seat be given to PRC, US vetoes

  3. II. Korean War, U.N. Action • June ‘50: North Korea, supported by S.U., crosses 38th Parallel • U.N. votes to take action (S.U. not present to veto) C. Nov ‘50 : U.S. Gen. MacArthur leads UN army 1. pushes NK to China D. Mao’s Chinese army enters war , pushes UN back into S Korea, back & forth for next 2 years 1 2 4 3

  4. E. MacArthur’s Solution 1. MacArthur urges Truman to drop an atomic bomb on China 2. Truman says goal is to get NK out of SK, can’t expand the war 3. MacArthur publicly criticizes Truman to Press & Congress 4. Truman fires MacArthur F. Korean War ends where it started  Communism Contained
