  3. WHY CONCENTRATE ON METROLOGY EDUCATION & TRAINING ? From the NCSLI perspective - • “Metrology community is facing a shortage of qualified, trained metrology personnel across the U.S.” • “VP Education & Training developed and implementing a plan to increase the opportunities for NCSLI members to obtain technical training.” NCSL INTERNATIONAL SERVING THE WORLD OF MEASUREMENT

Multimedia DVD Content • Video • Brief version (3 min)- Metrology career one-stop to distribute and post on career websites • Longer video- Metrology overview • Career vignettes and testimonials • Interactive • Linked to an interest quiz • Use examples of “high profile” Metrology NCSL INTERNATIONAL SERVING THE WORLD OF MEASUREMENT

Multimedia DVD Content • Resources • Pamphlet • Job description, career paths, income • URL links to national Metrology organizations and educational programs • NCSLI membership opportunities and benefits • Educator resources • Measurement lesson plans (e.g., K-4, 5-8, 9-12, 13+) NCSL INTERNATIONAL SERVING THE WORLD OF MEASUREMENT

  12. 4. Metrology Education • Provide multiple fora for metrology educators to interact, and to encourage sharing of ideas and resources, and to help ensure that stakeholder educational needs are met. NCSL INTERNATIONAL SERVING THE WORLD OF MEASUREMENT

  13. 6. Training Opportunities • Ensure development, implementation, and recognition of real-time (fast-response) metrology training. NCSL INTERNATIONAL SERVING THE WORLD OF MEASUREMENT

CANADIAN INPUT TO THE PROCESS • Cameron attends most Education & Training Committees held contiguously with NCSL International & Measurement Science Conferences • Canadian Contact person for Committee 164 -Education System Liaison • Gave invited paper at NCSLI 2005- “The Canadian Experience In Metrological Education & Training” • Liaison with Canadian organization to update / harmonize (to the extent it is practical) National Occupation Classifications NCSL INTERNATIONAL SERVING THE WORLD OF MEASUREMENT

  17. Test Equipment Clearing House • Develop a link on the NCSLI website • Create a clearinghouse of test and measurement equipment • From labs, companies, and manufacturers to donate to educational institutions • Equipment manuals may be included • Available equipment can be listed by donators, special instructions on shipping, set-up etc. NCSL INTERNATIONAL SERVING THE WORLD OF MEASUREMENT

Test Equipment Clearing House • Educational institutions can browse site • See if immediate needs can be fulfilled • Section to post needs for donators to browse • Offer instruction on the donation process • Including proper forms and transaction documents needed for tax credit for the donators, shipping cost calculation, etc. NCSL INTERNATIONAL SERVING THE WORLD OF MEASUREMENT

  19. Metrology Graduate Outreach Project Provide new metrology graduates Congratulation letter NCSLI welcome package Possibly one year student membership To be discussed with NCSLI Board of Directors NCSL INTERNATIONAL SERVING THE WORLD OF MEASUREMENT

Metrology Internship Project • Develop a list of available metrology internships • NCSLI Online Job Board • Add internship category • Encourage • Postings by NCSLI members • Utilization by students and educational institutions • Benefits • Utilize current infrastructure • Target “Job Seekers” using the forum NCSL INTERNATIONAL SERVING THE WORLD OF MEASUREMENT
