  2. Abate • Verb - To become weaker; to decrease. • The speaker waited until the applause had abated before continuing.

  3. Acknowledge • Verb - To admit the existence of. • Verb - To express recognition or thanks for. • Did the teacher acknowledge the new student?

  4. Agent • Noun - A person who acts or does business for another. • Noun – something that brings about a result. • The author’s agent found a company to publish his latest mystery story.

  5. Authority • Noun – the right to give orders, make decisions, or take action; an expert. • The researcher, Jane Goodall, is a world authority on chimpanzees.

  6. Devastate • Verb- to ruin or destroy completely. • The lack of rain will surely devastate the crops this year.

  7. epidemic • Noun – the rapid spreading of disease to many people at one time. • The flu epidemic of 1918 killed over twenty million people. • Adjective – spreading rapidly. • AIDS became epidemic in central Africa in the 1980s.

  8. Estimate • Noun – a number that is not exact; a careful guess. • The estimate for my car repair is $1,000. • Verb –to figure out roughly; make an approximate calculation. • We estimate that it will take 12 hours to get to Texas.

  9. Evict • Verb – to force out of property by taking legal action. • The landlord threatened to evict the renters for not paying rent.

  10. Impartial • Adjective – not favoring one side more than another; fair. • A judge should be impartial in a courtroom.

  11. Industrious • Adjective – hardworking; not lazy • The more industrious workers were given a raise for their hardwork.

  12. Infuriate • Verb – to make very angry. • Cruelty to animals infuriates me.

  13. Irrelevant • Adjective – having nothing to do with the subject. • Do not put irrelevant information in your essay.

  14. Precise • Adjective – exact; accurate • Do you know the precise amount for the repair? I need more than an estimate.

  15. Sham • Noun – something fake or false. • Their offer to make us rich in two days was a sham. • Adjective – not genuine; fake. • His sham apology did not fool his mother. • Verb – to pretend. • We shammed illness so we could stay home.

  16. Trek • Noun – a long, slow, and difficult journey. • The hikers were tired after their trek over the mountain. • Verb – to travel slowly and with difficulty. • Sam trekked ten miles to town when his car broke down.
