  1. The Father of Faith Genesis 12

  2. UR Gen.12:1 Then the LORD told Abram, “Leave your country, your relatives, and your father's house, and go to the land that I will show you.” Background

  3. Genesis 12Who was this man Abram? • Lived around 2050 BC • The climax of Sumerian Culture • Sargon “the Great” • Egyptian Middle Kingdom begins

Genesis 12Who was this man Abram? • Lived around 2050 BC • A “Nobody” • “He lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, dwelling in tents…” Heb.11:9 • “Here I am, a stranger in a foreign land, with no place to bury my wife. Please let me have a piece of land for a burial plot…” Gen.23:4

  5. Genesis 12Who was this man Abram? • Lived around 2050 BC • A “Nobody” • The “Father of faith” • “So Abraham is the spiritual father of those who believe and are saved without obeying Jewish laws.” – Romans 4:11b • “he was called the friend of God” – James 2:23

  6. The Abrahamic Covenant • Gen. 12:2-3 See also 13:15ff; 15:18ff; 17:2ff; 22:15ff • “I will make you into a great nation” • “I will bless you” • “you will be a blessing” • “all peoples on earth will be blessed through you” Psalms 8:3-6 (NLT)When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers— the moon and the stars you have set in place— What are mortals that you should think of us, mere humans that you should care for us? For you made us only a little lower than God, and you crowned us with glory and honor. You put us in charge of everything you made, giving us authority over all things— “I am the Lord, I am the Lord, the merciful and gracious God.” – Exodus 34:6

  7. The Abrahamic Covenant • Gen. 12:2-3 • An Issue of Abraham’s Heart (Gen.15) 15:5 Then the Lord brought Abram outside beneath the night sky and told him, “Look up into the heavens and count the stars if you can. Your descendants will be like that—too many to count!” 15:6 And Abram believed the Lord, and the Lord declared him righteous because of his faith.

  8. The Abrahamic Covenant • Gen. 12:2-3 • An Issue of Abraham’s Heart (Gen.15) • God’s intention for all humanity I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, "Look, the home of God is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them” Rev.21:3

  9. The Abrahamic Covenant • Gen. 12:2-3 • An Issue of Abraham’s Heart (Gen.15) • God’s intention for all humanity • Demonstrated in Gen.15:10-18 • Cut a Covenant • Unconditional! (vs.12-18) I will cut you apart just as you cut apart the calf when you walked between its halves to solemnize your vows. Jeremiah 34:18 (NLT)

  10. The Abrahamic Covenant • Gen. 12:2-3 • An Issue of Abraham’s Heart (Gen.15) • God’s intention for all humanity • Demonstrated in Gen.15:10-18 • Accepted entirely by Grace For "Anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." Romans 10:13 (NLT)

  11. The Walk of Faith • The Fruit of a Relationship of Faith • 10 years passed since Abe & Sarah entered the promised land… • Still no sign that God would act • Sarah and Abe now in their mid 80’s • Finally they decide to take matters into their own hands. . . "The LORD has kept me from having any children," Sarai said to Abram. "Go and sleep with my servant. Perhaps I can have children through her." And Abram agreed. Gen. 16:2

  12. The Walk of Faith • The Fruit of a Relationship of Faith • 10 years passed since Abe & Sarah entered the promised land… • Abe proposed an alternative scenario And Abraham said to God, “Yes, may Ishmael enjoy your special blessing!” – Gen.17:18a But God replied, “Sarah, your wife, will bear you a son. You will name him Isaac, and I will confirm my everlasting covenant with him – Gen.17:18b

  13. The Walk of Faith • The Fruit of a Relationship of Faith • 10 years passed since Abe & Sarah entered the promised land… • Abe proposed an alternative scenario • Two ways to fulfillment (Gal.4:22f) The son of the slave-wife was born in a human attempt to bring about the fulfillment of God's promise. But the son of the freeborn wife was born as God's own fulfillment of his promise. It’s not enough that we want to do God’s will. We also need to do it in dependence on his power! And you, dear brothers and sisters, are children of the promise, just like Isaac. Galatians 4:28 (NLT)

  14. The Walk of Faith • The Fruit of a Relationship of Faith • 10 years passed since Abe & Sarah entered the promised land… • Abe proposed an alternative scenario • Two ways to fulfillment (Gal.4:22f) • It can mean waiting on God! (Rom.4:19-20) And Abraham's faith did not weaken, even though he knew that he was too old to be a father at the age of one hundred and that Sarah, his wife, had never been able to have children. Abraham never wavered in believing God's promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this he brought glory to God.

  15. Comparing the Sons Ishmael Isaac • Human effort • Divine power • Human Speculation • God’s Revelation • Quick Fix Solution • Waiting on the Lord Is.40:30,31 – Even youths will become exhausted, and young men will give up. But those who wait on the LORD will find new strength. They will fly high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.
