  4. Monopoly • A business that complete control of their market.

  5. Laissez-Faire • “Leave it alone” attitude the government had towards big business. • This allowed monopolies to occur.

  6. Sherman Antitrust Act • Outlawed monopolies • Passed in 1890

  7. Immigrants • People from other countries who come to America. • Very few settled in South

  8. New South • Belief in a new south that wasn’t dependent on agriculture • Had to expand industries • Rely less on a few cash crops (cotton) • Grow more food crops

  9. Henry Grady • A New South advocate who believed in using local resources (cotton) to expand industries in the south.

  10. Lost Cause • Belief that the “Old South” would rise again.

  11. Lint heads • People who worked in textile mills. • Lint was usually stuck to them

  12. Alonzo Herndon • Owned a barber shop in Atlanta that catered to whites • 1905 opened the Atlanta Mutual Insurance Association which sold policies to African Americans
