  1. Final Teaching Assignment HLHP 4200

  2. Assumptions • You have practiced a number of strategies throughout this course. • There are certain fundamental strategies you need to have mastered. • These fundamental strategies are consistent across any topic area. • These strategies are the essential elements of good technical teaching, and should be able to be produced at any time.

  3. 7 of 10 • For the following 10 features of an expert lesson, you will need to achieve at least 7 to pass this exam. • Each category is scored as “all-or-none”. • That is, you cannot “almost” a category. You do or you don’t.

  4. Activity Time • Your lesson will have at least 50% of the lesson time when children are engaged in activity. • Activity will be scored as when more than 50% of the children are either manipulating an object or performing a locomotor skill. • Time spent in moving in and out of organization and listening to the teacher does not count as activity time.

  5. Feedback • Throughout the entire lesson, there will be at least 3 PFB statements given for each activity episode. • That is, every time children are practicing, at least 3 different children will receive feedback per minute of that practice.

  6. Goal Statements At least 50% of all instructional task statements will have an associated challenge. • “See if you can make 4 in a row” • Try to stop the ball so that it becomes totally still – no fumbles”

  7. Questioning Delivery • Teachers will require a hands up response to questions. • Teachers will actively desist students who call out answers. • 75% of all questions asked will have these characteristics shown. • if students show both hands up and do not call out, this counts as a positive instance

  8. Clear Demonstration • Students will include at least one passing demonstration. • To pass, the demonstration must have all of the following criteria. • demonstration done at actual speed • demonstration in the context it will be used • all students are listening to the teacher • all students can see/hear teacher • teacher reinforces the key cues

  9. Pinpointing • Students will include at least three instances of positive pinpointing. • To pass, pinpointing must have both of the following criteria. • students are identified who are doing the task well • teacher reinforces what exactly they did well

  10. Back to the Wall • The teacher will assume a predominantly back to the wall position during the lesson. • Predominantly means that over 75% of the lesson time, the teacher will be working so that s/he can see the majority of the class.

  11. Starting/Stopping Protocols • Protocols for starting/stopping work will be practiced successfully at least one time during the lesson. • Protocols for starting/stopping work will be reinforced at least one other time during the lesson.

  12. Equipment Protocols • Protocols for dealing with equipment will be practiced at least one time during the lesson. • Protocols for dealing with equipment will be reinforced at least one other time during the lesson.

  13. Task Presentation • All tasks will be presented so that the actual talk time takes less than 1 1/2 minutes.
