  1. 1. woodlands Lowlands Interior plains Northern subartic Pacific coast Arctics 2.they believed that they were an integral part of the environment rather than being in control of it. The natural world was inseparable from the spiritual world. 3. CE= Common Era, based on the years since the birth of Christ. 4. Aboriginal traders distributed European goods among their people before these societies ever had face to face contact with Europeans. Aboriginals became familiar with European goods before they became familiar with the Europeans. 5. The 3 G's represent Europe motivation to explore and expand. Gospel (God)-desire to convert others- the larger their particular religious group, the more people that they would have power over to influence. Gold-enrich themselves- Mercantilism and the idea that there was a finite amount of valuable material, and those who had the most of it, would hold the most power Glory-win fame- be known and celebrated for accomplishments would bring fame, immortality and power.

  2. 6. Western Europeans believed that economic and military supremacy was linked to a quest to find a direct route to Asia. This would enable them to bypass the Muslims who restricted Europeans movements by land, and reach the silks, spices and gems that Asia had to offer. 7.The slave trade was originally developed as a labor force for the plantations that the Portuguese had developed in their colonies. They needed to bring the people from Africa because they had decimated many aboriginal populations who they had been using to do the work. Some of the effects of the salve trade started by the Portuguese and Spanish in the 16th century were: -created a transatlantic slave route -Europeans began the practice in the late 17th century-18th century -it expands from the Caribbean to other parts of the Americas -generated great wealth-industrialization to Europe -powerful process of globalization *over 300 years 11 millions Africans were kidnapped and transported out of Africa. If they survived the voyage, they were separated from their families and forced into labor until their death, 8.The seemingly unlimited supply of cod fish that Cabot discovered off the coast of Newfoundland could be thought of as "white Gold".It might be considered this to the Europeans who thought of fish as a coveted prize. The waters off the coast of England, France and Spain, were not able to meet it's demand. (Catholicism was the prominent religion, which prohibited eating meat 153 days a year...fish was not considered meat, therefore it was a wanted regular on Europeans tables)
