Wilson insisted discussions about a League be a major part of the peace treaties and in 1919 he took charge of drawing up plans for the League – by February he had drafted an ambitious plan. • All major nations would join the League • They would disarm • Disputes between countries would be settled by the League • They would protect each other • Decisions made by the League were to be adhered to • Protection of League members if one was invaded • If a member broke the Covenant and went to war, other members would stop trading with that country to stop it from fighting

The birth of the League • Arose from Woodrow Wilson’s 14 Points • Wilson wanted the League of Nations to be like a world parliament with representations from all nations and they would meet regularly • British leaders wanted a simple organisation that would just get together in emergencies • France wanted a strong League with its own army Which of these three kinds of ‘Leagues’ would be best at keeping peace?

  4. Problems: • The plan for the League was prepared in a hurry • People thought Wilson was arrogant – as if only he could solve Europe’s problems • Concerned with his idealism However…. Most people in Europe were willing to give Wilson’s plan a go!

  5. A body blow to the League Read pages 230 & 231 in your textbook. Take notes on the information here, and complete the Activity on page 231 – do this individually… NOT in pairs!

How did the League of Nations work? • The aims of the League: • To discourage aggression from any country • To encourage countries to co-operate, especially in business and trade • To encourage nations to disarm • To improve the living and working conditions of the people Read the Factfile(pg 232) and make notes from the information supplied here.
