  2. Principal's Message EVERY DAY, ON TIME! ATTENDANCE COUNTS As we enter our 4th quarter of the 2018-19 school year, we want to remind everyone that student absences and tardies really begin to add up! Although to you and your family it may seem like a day here and a day there, one absence/month throughout the school year results in attendance below 95% which is a concerning rate of attendance. As the year has progressed, we have seen a steady decline in Curran’s daily average attendance. We declined from 97% daily attendance in August to 93% daily attendance for the month of February. Although we do not expect students to be at school when they are sick, many of these absences are unexcused absences. If children don’t show up for school regularly, they miss out on fundamental reading and math skills and the chance to build a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Beginning in kindergarten, attendance counts! We are developing attendance habits! • Missing 10 percent; (or about 18 days/school year) can make it harder to learn to read. • Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two days every few weeks. • Being late or leaving early from school may lead to poor attendance and is documented as a tardy. Even one minute! • Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up. Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in Kindergarten so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Good attendance will help children do well in high school, college, and at work. In addition, tardies also add up throughout the school year. When students are late to class, not only is it a disruption for them, it is a disruption for the entire class – “Every day on time”. Mrs. Roden, EHC Principal

  3. Please join us April 18th from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. for our annual STEM Expo. Teachers have been working hard all year to integrate STEM into our curriculum and students have been reaping the benefits. Each grade level will showcase various learnings they have been working on all year. Students will demonstrate and explain their learning. Parents are invited to tour through all classrooms if they like. Some grade levels are setting up interactive activities for parents to participate in that require going to each classroom in that grade level. Such fun! We really value our STEM focus as it promotes hands-on engagement and motivation for learning all in a rigorous format. Students are in the driver’s seat and really take charge of their own learning, problem solving through engineering tasks, critically thinking through math problems and coming up with various solutions, skills we would want for all students in order to be successful. STEM EXPO Thursday, April 18 5:30pm – 7:00pm

  7. Counselor’s Corner Ashley Kruger School Counselor 951-696-1405 *2271 akruger@murrieta.k12.ca.us April 2019 In the Classroom… During the last four weeks, students in 4th-5th grade have received core curriculum lessons on diversity, stereotypes, inclusion and identity. Students began by watching the video “The Sneetches” by Dr. Suess. Students discussed why the star bellied sneetches thought they were better than the plain belly sneetches. We then discussed the concept of identity. Students were asked to write down 5 things on a piece of paper that are the most important to their identity- race, religion, personality, gender, ability/disability, mental health, role within the family, etc. Students then paired up and another student took away one of their pieces of papers (which represented a part of their identity.) Students were asked to think about what their life would be like without that part of their identity. Next, the idea of stereotypes were explored. Students learned about what a stereotype is and how making assumptions about a person based on a group that they belong to takes away their unique identity. Students were able to discuss times that they have felt stereotypes or see others being stereotyped. Lastly, students participated in an activity where we explored their similarities and differences about various topics. This allowed students to see that they were similar to some people and different from some people, and that was ok! Our differences are what make our world exciting!
