  5. Mark 6:1-6Jesus Rejected at Nazareth • Disciples witness disbelief on local scene • Judgment slapped on the Nazarene • Not because of flaw in the messenger • But unbelief…in the listener

  6. Mark 6:6-13Disciples on the Loose • Disciples hit town on tour • To heal, to preach, and give to the poor • Sticking to the bare minimal • Relying on God for the essential

  7. Mark 6:14-29Baptist Beheaded • Herod cannot swallow his pride • Slays John Baptist for sake of his bride • Baptist beheaded & his disciples disband • Jesus now the sole Prophet of the land

  8. Mark 6:30-445,000 Satisfied near Bethsaida • Jesus pulls off a trick from his hat • 5,000 plus fed by 2 fish & 5 loaves of bread • Little drummer boy give up his lunch • Jesus’ disciples feed the hungry bunch

  9. Mark 6:45-56 • V. 45 The 5,000 were fed • Jesus made His disciples get in boat • He dismissed the crowd • V. 46 He went up on mountainside to pray

Prayer BEFORE the storm • Prayer was his norm, routine, standard, life • Math 6:9… this is how you should pray • Our Father in heaven • Give us this day our daily bread • Mark 6:41 Taking 2 fish/5 loaves, looked UP • Mark 1:35…solitary place, dark, to pray • Luke 18:1…always pray and not give up • John 17:1… He looked up and prayed

  11. Prayer BEFORE the storm • Escaping • Temptation • 5,000+ wanted Him to be “Warrior Messiah” • Shield disciples from pride • Shield Himself from Satan’s lies (Satan had already showed Him world’s splendor…all this is yours if you bow down…Away from me, worship the Lord God only” Math 4:10)

  12. Prayer BEFORE the storm • Embarking • on His called mission • Come to preach, heal, save, die, raise on 3rd • Reminding, recalling, reviewing, rededicating • Romans 12:12 • Be joyful in hope • Patient in affliction • FAITHFUL IN….PRAYER

Prayer BEFORE the storm • Empathizing • interceding for his disciples • He had sent them out alone in the dark • He knew what was to come • Luke 22:31 Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. • Rom 8:34 Jesus @ right hand of God, interceding for us

  14. Prayer BEFORE the storm • Escaping • Is it time for us to run from temptation? • Embarking • When should you and I start on our mission? • Empathizing • Why not intercede today? • Phil 4:6 be anxious for nothing, but in everything, in prayer and supplication…

Prayer BEFORE the storm • Daniel prayed before the lions den • Job prayed before the tragedy and storms • Esther prayed before seeking king’s favor • Jehoshaphat prayed before he fought • Nehemiah prayed before he build the walls • Hannah prayed before she had Samuel • Jesus prayed before he fed 5,000!

Purpose IN the storm • V. 47 Evening came, boat in middle of the Sea, and He was alone on land • V. 48 He saw them straining at the oars, because the wind was against them • V. 49 About the 4th watch of the night, He went out to them, walking on the Sea. • V. 51 spoke to them, take courage, climbed in boat, and wind died down

  17. Purpose IN the storm • It’s 3 – 6 AM, darkest hours of the night • Disciples were off course (middle of Sea) • Straining against the wind • Toiling in rowing • Before, Jesus was in the boat (Mark 4:35-41) • Now, Jesus is not with them

Purpose IN the storm • Rage and Resentment • Hearts were hardened (V. 52) • Perhaps they felt abandoned • Fear and Faith • V.49 when they saw Him, they were terrified • Thought He was a ghost • Peter steps out (Math 14:29), walks, falters • Peter WALKED ON HIS STORM! • Master and Miracles • He spoke, “Take courage, it is I . Don’t be afraid.”

  20. Purpose IN the storm • Middle of Desert (Israelites “In the storm”) • Manna from Heaven • Water from rocks • 40 years…God reveals His laws • Middle of Sea (Disciples “In the storm”) • He sent them • He saw them • He spoke to them…God reveals His SON

  21. He Walks on Water! (COLLOQUIALISM) • Jesus defies gravity and proves He is God • Job 9: 1-8 God speaks to the sun and it does not shine. He alone stretches out the heavens and treads onthe waves of the sea. • Gen 1:2 and the Spirit of God was hoveringoverthe waters. • Psalm 89:9 You rule over the surging sea; when its waves mount up, you still them.

  23. Purpose IN the storm • Storms are under His control • Psalm 89:9 “rule over” • Storms are part of His plan for our lives • Job 5:7 man was born for trouble • John 16:33 in this world…trouble, BUT I have overcome! • Storms are of limited duration • Psalm 30:5 weeping PM, BUT rejoicing AM!

  25. III. Power AFTER the storm • V. 53 Crossed over, landed at Gennesaret • V. 54 People recognized Jesus • V. 55 They ran, carried the sick • V. 56 They begged to touch even cloak; those who touched were healed

  26. Conclusion • Jesus sends us, sees us, and sustains us • Deut 31:6 He will never leave or forsake you! • Jesus is all powerful and all present • Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, and ever-present help in trouble! • In storm, coming out, or going into storm • Pray, Pray, Pray!!! And Walk ON your storm! • I Thes 5:17 Pray continually • Anxious, Angry, Apprehensive It is I…is with you!
