  2. Attempts at Compromise • Crittendon Compromise proposed that the Union be preserved, but the Missouri Compromise line be extended through the rest of the western territories • Kentucky Senator James Crittendon • Lincoln quickly rejected this idea because he was against slavery

  3. Fall of Fort Sumter Located in the port city of Charleston, SC After the fort fell, the South was judged to be in a state of rebellion When the first 7 states seceded, they took with them many federal forts, mints, & arsenals within their borders

  4. Fall of Fort Sumter The fort was still under federal control The South needed the fort in order to control the access to Charleston If the North lost the fort, it would be a sign that Lincoln wouldn’t protect federal property in the seceded states

  5. Fall of Fort Sumter The fort began to run out of supplies Lincoln notified the South that he would send UNARMED supply ships to re-arm the fort, a strategy he used to get the South to fire first and be seen as the aggressors The South did fire and Sumter fell in 34 hours

  6. THIS TRIGGERS THE CIVIL WAR!!!

  7. Fall of Fort Sumter Lincoln called for the Union States to provide 75,000 soldiers to fight the South 4 more Southern states seceded from the Union putting the total at 11 The Confederacy names Richmond, Virginia their capital

  8. Fall of Fort Sumter 4 other border states (slave states) remained in the Union West Virginia broke away from Virginia because they wanted to remain loyal to the Union WV was admitted into Union as a slave state

  9. Fall of Fort Sumter Lincoln felt he had to keep these states, especially Maryland If Maryland seceded the Union capital of Washington DC would be lost to the Confederacy Lincoln declares publicly that he is fighting not to free slaves but to save the Union

  10. Advantages of the North Larger population Greater industrial resources More railroad lines Possession of US Navy

  11. Advantages of the South • Would be fighting a defensive war • Excellent military leaders • Robert E. Lee - Joseph Johnston

  12. Battle of Bull Run • First Battle – led to over confidence of Confederates • Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson and his men held the left side of the confederate line

  13. Battle of Bull Run • Confederate victory shocked the North • Made ALL realize war wouldn’t be short • Training and planning emphasized • Joseph Johnston named Confederate army commander • George McClellan head of Union forces
