  1. Circle of Knowledge based on the book, The Core Six Essential Strategies for Achieving Excellence

  2. Reasons to Use • helps create a classroom culture where rich conversations become the norm. • develops students’ thinking through provisional writing and effective question, working in small groups and evaluating ideas. • to be successful in diverse settings students need to learn to listen attentively, appreciate opposing points of view and disagree with ‘steamrolling’ their peers.

  3. Implementation • Pose an open-ended question that hooks students into the material. • Ask a focusing question that highlights the central topic or theme. • Give time to stop and think about the question. Jot down ideas and share responses with a partner/small group before discussing with whole group. • Whole class discussion. Encourage all students to share ideas, respond to prompts and questions, refine their ideas and evaluate the depth of their understanding. • Record student responses and summarize key content with students. • Students reflect on the discussion and their own participation. • Synthesize student learning with a task that asks them to apply what they learned during the discussion.

  4. Planning Considerations • What are my topic and purpose? Look for topics that are controversial. • How will my focusing questions set up the discussion? Focusing questions should connect the opening discussion generated by the sparking question to the actual content. The question should be broad and open-ended. • How will my sparking question generate student interest and activate prior knowledge? Sparking question comes before focusing question.
