Introduction to ASES The After School Education and Safety program is the result of a 2002 voter-approved initiative, Prop 49, to fund the establishment of before and after school education and enrichment programs. NLMUSD was granted 1.35 million dollars in 2010 to continue the work it has been doing with students after school at the elementary. ASES Prep is NLMUSD’s elementary after school intervention program which is offered at the following elementary schools: Chavez, Dolland, Edmondson, Foster Road, Glazier, Johnston, Lampton, Moffitt, Morrison, New River, Nuffer, Sanchez

Mission Statement In collaboration with educators, families, and the community, the mission and vision of the After School Education and Safety Preparatory for the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, is to help close the Achievement Gap in K-12 Education by focusing on student academic performance through data-driven instruction, exposure to higher education social emotional support, and opportunities for students to become life-long learners.

  4. Sample ASES Prep Schedule

  5. HOMEWORK SUPPORT Students receive 1 hour of homework time and support. Additional homework time is provided during study hall and center time. In some classes, small groups are pulled during homework time.

  6. MINI LESSONS After School Educators conduct mini lessons every day for 15 – 20 minutes to develop conceptual understanding through the instruction of a specific skill.

  7. Mini Lesson Curriculum Materials Standards Plus, Time For Kids, Vocabulary and Comprehension by Practice Makes Perfect, & teacher-created materials

  8. Small Group / Guided Reading After School Educators pull students into small groups to provide small group instruction and guided reading to reinforce mini-lessons and reading skills.

  9. CENTERS Students rotate through 3 – 4 different standards based workstations /centers to reinforce new concepts. Previous standards are also spiraled into center rotations. Curriculum materials include Mountain Language, Take It To Your Seat Literacy Centers, and teacher created materials.

  10. DRTA – DIRECTED READING THINKING ACTIVITY After School Educators model the use of meta-cognitive strategiesto support students in learning reading strategies (i.e. Self-questioning, predicting, summarizing, etc.)

  11. ENRICHMENT After School Educators facilitate enrichment clubs 1 or more times a week to extend learning into different disciplines and topic areas. Students rotate through different clubs that range from Science, Astronomy, Multicultural Studies, Sports, Karaoke, and more!

  12. COLLEGIATE CULTURE After school educators adopt a college in their classrooms creating a culture of higher education through consistent exposure to college themes and discussions.

  13. Making College a Reality Every ASES Prep Program visits one or more universities during the course of the year to allow students to make direct connections to their future.

  14. After Schools Got Talent ASES Prep’s District-Wide Talent Show focuses on highlighting and showcasing the talent of our youth and community. This year, it will be held at Excelsior Auditorium on Wednesday, April 25th, 2011 in the evening.

  15. PROGRESS MONITORING AND DATA Cycles of Inquiry are ASES Prep’s primary form of monitoring student progress through bi-weekly assessments on singular standards.

  16. COI Pacing Guide and Alignment with District’s Units of Study ASES Prep’s COI are aligned with the District’s Units of Study to allow content standards to be previewed by students prior to regular day instruction.

  17. Leadership & Professional Development ASES Prep’s monthly professional development provides training to tutors on classroom management, lesson planning, objective writing, data analysis, SDAIE,

Broadening Our Scope: Cultural Cognizance and Counseling Services As part of Institute, our week-long Site Lead and Tutor training series, the team was asked to conduct a “community walk” to get a better understanding of the students they serveIn addition, the program is offering free parent/child workshops in the Spring and is in the process of building partnerships with local universities to provide counseling services to students after school.

  19. ASES vs. Non ASES Data Data plays a significant role in the decision making that takes place in ASES Prep include those around instruction, curriculum, and intervention. Our most recent analyses of ASES vs. Non-ASES data shows promising results which suggests that students who receive supplemental instruction after school performed better on state-testing.
