  1. Terrorists, Sept. 11, and the Persian Gulf War Standard 8.6 E.Q. What events are impacting the world today?

Terrorists Events • Terrorist groups attempted to call attention to the plight of the Palestinian and extort concession from the Israel by hijacking airplanes and cruise ships and by sending suicide bombers to murder civilians and spread terror. • The importance of Middle East oil to the US led to shuttle diplomacy to stop the oil embargo by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. (OPEC).

  3. Terrorists Events • US withdrew troops from Lebanon when terrorists bombed a US army barracks and negotiated with the regiem in Iran to gain the release of American hostages held in Lebanon. • US led the world in the response to the Iraq invasion of Kuwait in the early 1990’s.

  4. Persian Gulf War • Persian Gulf War had the support of many other nations of the world and resulted in quick military victory restored the independence of Kuwait. • Air strikes were launched from Saudi Arabia. • Known as Operation Desert Storm. • Saddam Hussein – Iraq’s leader, invades Kuwait, US gets involved because of oil. • Bush – liberated Kuwait, but Saddam stayed in power.

Persian Gulf War • Withdrawal of US military forces from Iraq after the first Gulf war did not alter the balance of power in the Middle East. • Joined other extreme religious fundamentalist groups, particularly the Taliban that had driven the Soviets out of Afghanistan, to form the terrorist groups, Al Qaeda. • Al Qaeda: Islamic terrorist groups. • Osama Bin Laden – Leader of Al – Qaeda.

September 11, 2001 • Bin Laden becomes outraged when the Saudi government refuses his help and chooses the US & UN to take care of Sadden Hussein. • After the Bombing of the World Trade Center, the US sent military forces to overthrow the Taliban in Afghanistan because they had harbored Al Qaeda. • US government citing the presence of weapons of mass destruction also invaded Iraq. • Such weapons were never found. • US continues to have troops in Afghanistan and is supporting the development of democratic instruction .

September 11, 2001 • Department of Homeland Security – to protect our nation against any future attacks. • Patriot Act – Increased authority of law enforcement and gave them great latitude. • Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) – designed to destroy the government that offered safe haven to Al – Qaeda and bring bin Laden to justice.
