  2. Travel distance from a guest room to a corridor exit.. The travel distance to the corridor door from any guest room or guest suite to the nearest exit should not exceed 75 ft.

  3. Dead End Corridors • A dead end corridor is a corridor with only one direction of exit. In other words, if a person turns down a corridor with a dead end, there is no way out except to retrace his or her path. • The codes set maximum lengths for dead-end corridors because they can be deadly in an emergency. • The most common dead end length is a maximum of • 20 ft (6096 mm). • It is measured one foot from the end of a corridor, following the natural path of travel, to the centerline • of the corridor that provides the choice of two means • of egress. • If sprinkled, up to 50 ft (15,240 mm).

  4. Fire Classifications • CEILING TREATMENTS • Steiner Tunnel Test & Room Corner Test • WALL COVERINGS • Steiner Tunnel Test & Room Corner Test • FLOOR COVERINGS • Pill Test & Radiant Panel Test

  5. Can marble be used in bathrooms? • Settlements for injury related medical expenses in hotel bathrooms range from 1,800 into the 6 figures. • In June 2000 a Wisconsin Jury awarded $189,000 to a plaintiff who slipped and fell in the bathtub in the Hyatt Regency in Milwaukee. • Some in juries can include strains and sprains, broken hips, and back, shoulder and rest injuries. • Serious injuries can include rib fractures and blood clots on the brain, that can take 3 to 5 days or even weeks to become obvious. • Indonesian sandstone is an alternative to use that is not slippery when wet. • Using separate shower stalls and soaking tubs decrease the slickness on the floor. • Flooring for ADA bathrooms must have a .6 rating or higher. The higher the rating is more coefficient for affliction.

  6. Fabric Fire Standards • The vertical flame test are generally required for vertical treatments, • such as curtains, draperies, widow shades, large wall hangings or tapestries, • and plastic films used for decorative purposes. Any vertical finish that is • exposed to air on both sides is considered a vertical treatment. • The vertical flame tests include: • NFPA 701 (for shower curtains material), • ASTM D6413 AND UL 214 • CAL 117

  7. Signage Requirements When a sign is required by codes, the codes refer to the ICC/ANSI accessibility standard for specific sign requirements. For example, a room number sign needs to meet accessibility requirements including lettering height, mounting locations, lettering contrast, and the use of braille. Most commonly, a sign is mounted 48”-60” above the floor. This height is measured to the base line of the lettering on the sign. The sign must also be mounted on the latch side of the door.

  8. Most toilet and bathroom facilities require a sign that meets certain accessibility requirements. All multi-toilet or multi-bathing facilities must post a sign of the international symbol of accessibility on the accessible stall door. This is shown in figure 7.10. assessable signs must also meet certain mounting requirements as shown in figure 7.11. The sign must be located on the latch sign of the door entering the facility (not the hinge side).

  9. A good sign system should begin directing people from the moment they enter your campus/facility. Your signs should be easily read, placed at major decision points, flow logically, and clearly define the layout of the facility. It may take some time to work out the right plan for your signs, but it is a crucial step. Proper signage contributes to the perception people have of your facility and, in cases of emergency evacuations, could very well become a matter of life or death. 30. Elevator Flooring The selection of appropriate elevator flooring is more involved than it might appear at first glance. Elevators are a confined space with usually not the best ventilation. Glued-down carpet in an elevator means the car has to be taken out of service every time the carpet needs to be vacuumed or shampooed and, depending on the atmospheric conditions which effect drying, it can involve a significant amount of time. Using hard flooring cuts down on the drying time, but cleaning time can still remain a factor. In order to cut down on maintenance, weather mats can be deployed in each elevator car to keep the hard floors from becoming slippery when wet. However, no matter how well the mats are installed, they can become a bit of a tripping hazard as older people, small children or handicapped people enter the car mat.
